Denver Broncos Request Interview with Atlanta Falcons OC Kyle Shanahan

His father is the most successful coach in franchise history. Is Kyle Shanahan set to replace him eight years later?

After defeating the New Orleans Saints 38-32 yesterday, the Atlanta Falcons secured a first round bye, giving them two weeks before they hit the field in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Denver Broncos have requested to interview Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan during that bye week for the vacant head-coaching position.

Kyle Shanahan is, of course, the son of Mike Shanahan, who won two Super Bowls while serving as head coach of the Broncos from 1995 to 2008.

In his second year as offensive coordinator for the Falcons, Shanahan has taken their offense to new heights, establishing a dominant ground attack with Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman while constructing a legitimate MVP candidacy for quarterback Matt Ryan, who has thrown for 38 touchdowns and just under 5,000 yards this season. After playing wide receiver for the University of Texas, Shanahan has made stops as a graduate assistant at UCLA, offensive quality control coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, various positions with the Houston Texans (including being promoted to offensive coordinator at the age of 28), offensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins under his father, and finally offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns before moving on to Atlanta.

Shanahan's style is certainly a derivative of the offensive scheme that Gary Kubiak brought back to Denver when he began as head coach in 2015. The hiring would make a lot of sense given Denver's current offensive personnel established during the last two years and Shanahan's own philosophy as an offensive architect.

It's worth noting that when the Broncos parted ways with Mike Shanahan after the 2008 season, it caused somewhat of a rift between him and president Joe Ellis.

Eight years later, as the Broncos seek an interview with his son, it's still questionable as to how that will effect Kyle Shanahan's decision as he chooses between the Broncos, the Los Angeles Rams, and the Jacksonville Jaguars, who have all requested to interview the young coach.
