Denver Broncos Reportedly Interested In Kansas City Special Teams Coordinator Dave Toub

Add another candidate to the Broncos search for a new head coach.

You don't see it often in the NFL, but sometimes special teams coordinators rise to the level of head coach. John Harbaugh pulled it off, and parlayed his experience into a Baltimore Ravens victory in Super Bowl XLVII.

Denver Broncos GM John Elway likely doesn't care how he comes by it, but he wants a bright, innovative mind as his new head coach. One guy who fits that bill, and whom the Broncos reportedly have interest in is Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub.

At 54 years old, Toub has coached in the NFL for 16 years, mostly in the third phase. He's been a darkhorse to land a head coaching job dating back to 2015. Toub's current boss, Andy Reid, has been a huge proponent.

“He would be phenomenal,” said Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.

Toub doesn't fit the 'young' mold Elway extolled on Monday, but as a first-time head coach, he would bring some fresh blood and his unique mind as a schemer.

Since Toub became a special teams coordinator 13 years ago, his units have scored 30 times — the most in the NFL by a mile. He's an intriguing option.

Elway would be bucking tradition in hiring Toub, but Denver's front office closer has never been one to be shackled by tradition or conventional norms. Elway, himself, is a poster child for the unconventional.

Nobody, except Owner Pat Bowlen, expected Elway, a Hall-of-Fame player and former car dealership czar, to be as ragingly successful as he's been. Don't sleep on Dave Toub being high up Elway's list as an option for head coach.
