Denver Broncos Expected To Interview Miami Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph Early This Week

With the Dolphins knocked out of the playoffs, the Broncos will now be free to interview defensive coordinator Vance Joseph.

With two interviews under their belt, the Denver Broncos have been waiting to meet with the last of their top-3 candidates to fill their head coaching vacancy. Now, with the Miami Dolphins eliminated from the playoffs by the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Broncos are expected to meet with defensive coordinator Vance Joseph soon.

The interview could happen as soon as Monday. One factor that could help Joseph's cause, is the fact that out of Denver's top-3 candidates, which also includes Kansas City Special Teams Coordinator Dave Toub and Atlanta Offensive Coordinator Kyle Shanahan, Joseph is the only one available to immediately get to work.

Both the Atlanta Falcons and the Kansas City Chiefs are coming off their respective first-round byes, and wouldn't be available to actually get to work until after next weekend, at the soonest. For the foreseeable future, Joseph will have nothing but time on his hands.

At this stage, I doubt that availability will be much of a factor, if any. The Broncos are intent on finding the right guy, whom the team can build around in the coming years, even if it means being patient.

The 44-year-old Joseph interviewed well with the Broncos back in 2015, and has remained on GM John Elway's radar. If Joseph can capitalize on that good first impression and build on it with yet another impressive interview, it could give him an advantage in the running.

However, his team is coming off an embarrassing 30-12 loss in the Wildcard Round today, and with how badly his unit performed, I've got to wonder how that could reflect in Denver's eyes. But on the other hand, with the injuries Joseph's unit has dealt with this year, especially in the secondary, it's a great credit to him that the Dolphins even made the playoffs.

Right now, the momentum is with Kyle Shanahan. But Vance Joseph will get his opportunity to woo the Broncos brain trust in the coming days.
