The Denver Broncos boast one of the league's most accomplished and envied front offices. From GM John Elway, to Director of Player Personnel Matt Russell, to Director of Pro Personnel Tom Heckert, the Broncos have an embarrassment of riches at the respective heads of the scouting department.
New San Francisco 49ers GM John Lynch has taken notice and is interested in poaching one of Elway's right hand guys. According to Mike Florio of PFT, the Niners have their eye on Adam Peters, Denver's Director of College Scouting.
The move could have been blocked by the Broncos, since Peters isn’t getting full control over the roster. The Broncos, however, ultimately decided not to stand in Peters’ way in order to foster a sense that upward mobility will be rewarded — even if that means losing someone they’d otherwise prefer to keep. (The decision from Broncos G.M. John Elway also may have been fueled by respect for Lynch, along with a realization that Peters will be a hot candidate for General Manager openings sooner than later.)

Peters has been with the Broncos for eight seasons, and is in his first year as director of college scouting. He served as Denver's assistant director of college scouting from 2014-15 following three years as a national scout and two seasons scouting the West for the team.
In his 13 NFL seasons, Peters has contributed to three Super Bowls, five conference titles and 10 division crowns. He has been a major boon to Elway's efforts in the front office.
Yes, Elway is the only NFL general manager during the last five years to acquire future Pro Bowl players through the draft, street free agency, unrestricted free agency and college free agency. But each one of Denver's personnel directors have played a role in that, to say nothing of the relentless scouts themselves.
If Peters leaves for greener pastures, the Broncos will replace him and hopefully continue to get by. Peters is a guy who's developed a reputation around the league, and could soon join the ranks of the NFL's GMs. Matt Russell is another guy soon to be in high demand around the league as a GM.
UPDATE: San Francisco has in fact hired Adam Peters to be their V.P. of Player Personnel. A great step up for Peters.
