Broncos Offensive Line Assistant John Benton to Interview with San Francisco 49ers

Just one month into his job with the Broncos, offensive line assistant John Benton may be getting a promotion out west.

Fare thee well, assistant offensive line coach John Benton. Seasons change and — well, actually not in this case.

http://www.scout.com/nfl/broncos/story/1681565-5-reasons-you-should-go-p... Despite hiring Benton (a 14-year coach in the NFL who was most recently with the Jacksonville Jaguars) just a month ago when Vance Joseph's new staff was assembled, the Denver Broncos have granted him permission to interview with the San Francisco 49ers to become their offensive line coach. Quite a bit of upward mobility after just one month on the job for Benton.

Mike Klis of 9News, who first reported the story, notes that all signs point to Benton getting the job in San Francisco under new head coach Kyle Shanahan.

For Joseph and GM John Elway, this isn't a particularly out-of-character move to let Benton seek a better position with another franchise, albeit one in a different conference. Joseph himself has been on the wrong end of this type of situation, when the Broncos tried to hire him in 2015 to become their defensive coordinator. The Cincinnati Bengals, a notoriously tight-fisted organization, did not allow their defensive backs coach, Joseph, to seek greener pastures in Denver.

It's hard to say what kind of impact this will have on the Broncos' plans on the offensive line. Benton comes from the zone-blocking philosophy and would have introduced a bit of that element to counter what should be a more power-focused scheme under offensive coordinator Mike McCoy and offensive line coach Jeff Davidson. At this time, there has been no one tabbed to come in and replace Benton if indeed he is hired by the 49ers.
