Two New Veteran D-Linemen Enter Denver's Free Agent Radar

The Broncos are looking to sign a couple free agent defensive linemen and two new options recently emerged on the market.

Over the last few days, two new options have emerged on the veteran free agent market for the Denver Broncos. GM John Elway wants to upgrade the defensive line, and could be on the lookout to sign two starting-caliber veteran D-linemen in 2017. The Miami Dolphins may have inadvertently assisted Denver in that objective by releasing defensive tackle Earl Mitchell. The 6-foot-3, 310-pound Mitchell is entering his eighth season in the NFL.

Drafted in the third round of the 2010 Draft by Gary Kubiak's Houston Texans, Mitchell played out his entire rookie contract under current Broncos D-line coach Bill Kollar. Mitchell makes sense in Denver for multiple reasons, but perhaps one of the strongest are his ties to Head Coach Vance Joseph, who was his defensive coordinator in 2016.

Mitchell understands Denver's scheme and could immediately step in and start at nose tackle, with Sylvester Williams unlikely to be re-signed. Williams' departure is not a foregone conclusion, but it is expected.

Williams is seeking a change of scenery and the Broncos passed up on exercising his fifth-year option a year ago. Mitchell could step in and stop that gap, while the Broncos develop a draft pick behind him.

Another guy on Denver's radar is Jared Odrick. Also drafted in 2010, but with the 28th pick in the first round by Miami, Odrick was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday. At 6-foot-5, 295 pounds, Odrick would be an upgrade over defensive end Jared Crick opposite of Derek Wolfe.

The Broncos are expected to have a relatively flush war chest in free agency this year, so they can afford to sign a couple of quality veterans to the front seven. Mitchell is scheduled to meet with the Broncos on Wednesday.

However, there are several other good options on the free agent market this year, including Calais Campbell, Dontari Poe and Brandon Williams — to name a few. The Broncos will have options.

We expect the Broncos to make an effort to re-sign Vance Walker, who missed the entire 2016 season with a torn ACL.
