Denver Broncos Lose out on Early Free-Agent Run

We're not even officially into Free Agency and a few of the Broncos' targeted players are off the table.

It's not often in the John Elway era that you'll see the Denver Broncos sitting on their hands at the beginning of the Free Agency period, but as we near the official start, it looks like they have already missed out on some prominent targets. Three of the players that MHH reported the Broncos to have interest in--Danny WoodheadCalais Campbell, and Andrew Whitworth--have already been (all but) locked up by three separate teams.

First, Woodhead is expected to be scooped up by the Baltimore Ravens, the Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to bolster an already-talented defensive line by adding Campbell. And finally, the Los Angeles Rams plan on picking up Whitworth, the 35-year-old left tackle.

There was never any pressing need to grab a running back, especially given the depth of this year's draft class, and Campbell's $14 million per year deal with the Jags probably priced him out of Denver's plans, but the move by the Rams to grab Whitworth is certainly a blow to the Broncos, who will now have to scramble to find a competent left tackle in an underwhelming free-agent market and draft class.

At the left tackle position, the best options will likely come down to bringing back Russell Okung, seeking a trade, reaching out to someone like Riley Reiff or Ryan Clady, or taking their chances in the draft.

Of course, there's another element to all of this. A report came out yesterday that Tony Romo would take his time choosing his destination. If the Broncos are set on Romo, they would obviously have to reserve a good chunk of their cap to get him--thus a hesitant start to Free Agency.

UPDATE: Campbell to the Jags is not a done deal, officially, and a report has stated that he could take less money to join the Broncos.
