Los Angeles Rams Sign Cornerback Kayvon Webster

The Broncos lost special teams captain Kayvon Webster on the open market.

We've been reporting Kayvon Webster's movements on our premium insider's free agent tracker. There were several teams interested in Webster's services.

Webster has signed a two-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams worth $8 million. Adam Schefter reported that the deal can reach $12 million with incentives.

Throughout the process, Webster was looking for an expanded role on defense. Almost since he was selected in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft, Webster was stuck behind two All-Pros and a first round pick, as GM John Elway intimated on Monday.

"We love Kayvon and he’s done a heck of a job for us," Elway said. "Obviously that is position that we’re pretty deep in. My understanding is that Kayvon wants to play a little bit more.”

As the team's special teams captain, the Broncos had interest in bringing Webster back, but they weren't going to pay a No. 4 corner $4 million-plus per year. Now, Webster is reunited with Wade Phillips in a system he knows well.

As for the Broncos, with the defection of both Webster and nose tackle Sylvester Williams, the team is left with not one single draft pick from their 2013 class. Think about that.

2013 was easily Elway's worst draft class, replete with busts. But the Broncos mined value out of both Williams and Webster, who contributed to the team's World Championship in 2015, respectively.

Moving forward, the Broncos are deep at corner — as Elway said. There's also an opportunity to get even deeper with the 2017 draft class. This year's crop is filled with difference makers at cornerback and safety.
