Pre-Draft Rumor Mill Ties Christian McCaffrey To The Denver Broncos In The First Round

Could the Broncos have legit interest in taking Stanford's Christian McCaffrey in the first round of the upcoming NFL Draft?

Fans of the Denver Broncos have been pining for Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey, due in large part to McCaffrey having played his high school football at Valor Christian in Highlands Ranch and his father, Ed, having helped GM John Elway bring home the Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII.

Draft analyst Tony Pauline reported that the Broncos have a legitimate interest in Christian, and that it's due in no small measure to his family ties.

Where does he end up in the draft? During the combine I consistently heard daily rumors that the Denver Broncos could take McCaffrey in Round 1 in large part due to the Elway/McCaffrey family relationship dating back to Stanford.

McCaffrey has been one of the most prolific and explosive skill position players in college football over the last two years, and finished as the runner up in the Heisman Trophy voting in 2015 as a sophomore.

Christian struggled with the injury bug as a junior this past season, but he punctuated his collegiate career with a phenomenal individual performance at the NFL Scouting Combine. Considered to be more of a 'gadget' player by some scouts, there's little doubting McCaffrey's versatility. (Don't miss Erick Trickel's scouting report on McCaffrey here) He can serve as a change of pace runner, a receiver out of the backfield; he can play in the slot and he can be a team's return man. Christian is a true Swiss Army Knife and comes into the NFL with no character concerns, notwithstanding his decision to skip Stanford's Sun Bowl bout with North Carolina.

As much as I like Christian McCaffrey and believe that he will be a stud at the next level, I can't get past the idea that the Broncos have bigger fish to fry. Elway just invested millions of dollars into C.J. Anderson and a fourth round pick into Devontae Booker

With needs on both the offensive and defensive line, I have a hard time seeing Denver using their 20th pick in the first round on a running back. But if they were to do it, it would be for a prospect like McCaffrey, whose ties to the city of Denver, the organization and the Elway family go back a long ways.
