San Francisco 49ers Sign LB Dekoda Watson

The Broncos lose out on a quality backup to Kyle Shanahan's 49ers.

One of the remaining unrestricted free agents on the Denver Broncos has been scooped up by some familiar faces.

The San Francisco 49ers, led of course by new head coach Kyle Shanahan and GM John Lynch, signed linebacker Dekoda Watson. It's a three-year deal worth $6 million, according to Vic Lombardi.

Watson initially turned heads in the preseason when he showed off his pass-rushing abilities, but over the course of the regular season he was mostly relegated to a backup role, contributing mostly on special teams.

When guys like Von MillerDeMarcus WareShaq Barrett, and Shane Ray are ahead of you, it's tough to get meaningful reps as an edge linebacker in Denver. On the few opportunities he did have, Watson accumulated 17 combined tackles along with a sack and a forced fumble.

Watson, 29, is now joining his sixth team since being drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the seventh round out of Florida State in 2010. Although he would have provided nice depth for the Broncos linebacker corps, especially given the retirement of DeMarcus Ware, the move makes sense for Watson to join a rebuilding 49ers squad and get plenty of snaps on defense.

This move opens the door for the Broncos to potentially add more depth at outside linebacker, whether it be in the later rounds of the upcoming draft or in Free Agency. As John Elway has always demonstrated since taking over GM duties, you can never have too many pass rushers.
