Adam Schefter: Denver Broncos Exploring Trading Up in Round 1

While everyone is trying to move down, the Broncos are looking to go up.

The 2017 NFL Draft approaches. The clock counts down. War rooms are abuzz.

And the phones of generals and front-office brass are ringing off the hook in the remaining hours, as a flurry of teams are trying to climb down to a lower draft positions.

Then there's John Elway and the Denver Broncos, who currently own the 20th pick tonight. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, they're one of the few teams actually trying to move up.

A few things to consider here...

1. Just because it's being explored, doesn't mean it's necessarily the Broncos' priority.

2. This makes sense economically speaking. There's a ton of teams trying to get out of their spot and very few trying to move up (at least that we've heard of). That would give the Broncos a number of options, giving them some leverage in their negotiations, and ultimately drive the price down.

The Broncos have ten selections in the draft this year, but probably don't have ten open roster spots come August and September. If they're into someone five-to-ten picks from where they are at 20, they could afford to part with a couple of picks in order to pull it off. Keep in mind that it's also possible to trade compensatory picks, of which Denver has four.

4. Since Elway joined the front office, the Broncos have made a first-round trade in 2012, 2015, and 2016, moving down once and up the last two years.

So what's the team, and who's the pick?

There are rumors swirling that the Tennessee Titans are trying to move back from 5th overall and the Cleveland Browns are attempting to trade down from 12. Out of those two, the Browns seem most likely, given the eight-pick hike is within striking distance.

It's anyone's guess as to who Denver wants. Could be an offensive lineman like Forrest Lamp, Garett Bolles or a game-breaker like, gasp, Christian McCaffrey. Stay tuned.
