Denver Broncos Select Utah Offensive Tackle Garett Bolles In The First Round

The Broncos picked up their left tackle of the future in Garett Bolles.

On Draft Night, the Denver Broncos had the board fall exactly as they hoped. Despite eight skill-position players going in the first 12 picks and blue-chip prospects like Reuben Foster still available, GM John Elway defied many prognosticators by taking Utah Utes offensive tackle Garett Bolles with the 20th pick in the first round.

Following the selection, Elway took to Twitter to welcome Bolles (back) to the Colorado.

The Broncos were drawn to Bolles' toughness and meanstreak. He is an athletic tackle who prides himself on being "the nasty prick" he can be and "putting people in the dirt".

Bolles fits Denver's newfound mentality on the offensive line. In signing Ronald Leary and Menelik Watson, the Broncos targeted players who are willing and able to be the bullies.

That mentality fits Garett Bolles to a 'T'.

You can see Bolles' meanstreak in the clip below. Pay attention to how he finishes the play.

Our Senior Draft Analyst Erick Trickel has been reporting all day that Denver had their heart set on Bolles. Bolles was also the first round pick in the Huddle Up Podcast's War Room Mock Draft (see below).

Over the years, Elway's Broncos have shown a propensity for targeting trench players with experience playing at altitude. Although Salt Lake City's altitude is not as high as Denver's, Bolles has plenty of experience playing at a high level in the thin air of the Rockies.

Some fans will be disappointed that Denver passed on Foster, but the team's most glaring roster weakness was left tackle and although Bolles will be 25 years old by the time the season starts, the Broncos have their left tackle of the future.

Bolles must earn a starting role, and he'll have to compete with Donald Stephenson and Ty Sambrailo, but Denver's O-line just got a whole lot meaner.

After serving an LDS mission in Colorado Springs, Bolles, as he said on stage in Philadelphia, is "coming home" — to Colorado.
