We have long suspected that the Denver Broncos would take a flyer on a developmental quarterback in this year's NFL Draft, and they did just that. With the 253rd pick and final selection in the Draft, Denver took Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly.
Kelly, nephew of Hall of Famer Jim Kelly, was a five-star recruit and originally signed on with Clemson. After spats with the coaching staff, Kelly was bounced in 2014.
He went on to play for JUCO powerhouse — and the focus of Netflix's Last Chance U — Eastern Mississippi Community College. Kelly led them to a JUCO National Championship.
Ole Miss recruited Kelly, and it paid off. For the first time in school history, Kelly led the Rebels to wins over Alabama, Auburn and LSU all in the same year. Ole Miss won the Sugar Bowl and Kelly was named MVP.
In his senior season, Kelly got off to a good start before tearing his ACL and lateral meniscus in November of last year. He has been rehabbing and could very well be healthy enough to compete in training camp this year.
Make no mistake. Kelly comes with massive character concerns. His resume is replete with red flags. However, the Broncos like his upside. They'll have to have a good, long conversation with Kelly to establish boundaries and make sure he understands how thin the ice he's standing on truly is.
Kelly will step into a Broncos quarterback room populated by Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch. Safe to say, it's going to be interesting to see how Kelly fits in. If we could only be a fly on the wall in that room.
GM John Elway was in contact with Jim Kelly about the pick. Elway is doing Jim, a fellow QB class of 1983, a solid. Let's hope it doesn't backfire.
Our Senior Draft Analyst Erick Trickel had this to say about the Chad Kelly pick.
There is a major risk/reward here for the Broncos. Kelly can compete for a backup spot, but doesn't have the best tools for the NFL. Add in major character concerns and you understand why many are surprised he was picked. Denver has to be careful, because Kelly's personality clashes with the QBs on the roster. The Broncos are tempting fate with the potential for conflict between the three.
The fellas over at CBS Sports broke down the Chad Kelly pick and they bring up some good points about his production in college.
