"I've talked to Shanahan about it, I've talked to Elway about it. The only guy I haven't talked to much about it is Brian Griese, which is probably a good guy to get some info from, because he went through it. That's not a shot at him or anything. He went through the ridicule you're going to go through at this position, and if I was scared of it I wouldn't be here. I'm not scared of that. I know it's week to week and that's the beauty of the NFL."
-- Darius Holland, signed as a street free agent just a week into camp, started the opener at defensive tackle in place of second-year pro Dorsett Davis. Coaches liked the way Holland played in preseason, both in stopping the run and rushing the passer, and like that he has more game experience than Davis, who was on the inactive list for all 16 games as rookie.
At wide receiver, the Broncos started second-year pro Ashley Lelie in place of veteran Ed McCaffrey. Coach Mike Shanahan said that is only because Denver had a reverse called on the first play and Lelie runs it better.
But starters will change on a weekly basis, with coaches viewing McCaffrey, Lelie and Rod Smith all as starters.
--DE Bertrand Berry had one sack last week and will have a shot at a few more if Chargers left tackle Damien McIntosh struggles as he did in the opener. Berry has a quick first step and will give McIntosh trouble.
--RG Dan Neil did not practice Wednesday because of the flu. He wasn't even at the facility as coaches didn't want him spreading it to teammates.
--RG Cooper Carlisle filled in for ailing Dan Neil on Wednesday but Neil is expected to be ready to go for Sunday's game.
--TE Jeb Putzier remains listed as probable with a shoulder injury but he was active last week and it's possible he could see action this week especially if the Chargers force the Broncos to beat them through the air.
