Broncos LB Shaq Barrett to Miss 2-3 Months with Hip Injury

The Broncos could be without one of their rush linebackers for an extended period of time.

When the Denver Broncos reconvened for their second week of Organized Team Activities on Tuesday morning, they did so without one of their best pieces on defense, outside linebacker Shaq Barrett.

Barrett missed practice to meet with a doctor in order to evaluate a hip injury that was apparently sustained during last week's OTAs.

According to Brandon Krisztal, there's currently no inkling on how long Barrett will be sidelined, but there's a chance his absence might be prolonged.

Also, per Nicki Jhabvala of the Denver Post, Vance Joseph clarified after practice that Barrett's injury isn't a chronic issue, but rather a first-time ailment for the fourth-year linebacker.

This isn't necessarily a massive blow to the Broncos defense given that it's still May, but the hope is that the injury isn't one that lingers into training camp and bleeds further into the beginning of the regular season.

Denver loves to send their pass-rushers in waves, and with the retirement of DeMarcus Ware elevating Shane Ray into a starting role, Barrett is now the lynch pin of that second unit.

Until he recovers fully, the Broncos can see what they have in promising young players like linebacker Vontarrius Dora, who flashed in the 2016 preseason.

Other non-participants included wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, who was at home attending to a personal issue, according to Joseph.

UPDATE: According to Mike Klis of 9News, Barrett is expected to miss at least two to three months.
