IRVING, Texas – Thanksgiving Day has never been the kindest of holidays for the Denver Broncos. Today, while not being as cruel as previous years, did not come without its share of disappointments, most notably a season ending-injury to starting running back Olandis Gary.
Gary fractured the fibula in his left leg on Denver's fourth offensive play of the game, and will undergo surgery in Denver on Friday. With Terrell Davis still questionable for next Sunday's game against Miami, the Broncos were left with no other choice than to bring back former backfield teammate KaRon Coleman.
Coleman, who was released earlier this year when the Broncos were considered on of the deepest teams in the league, is expected to sign a contract within the next few days.
"It's crazy," Gary told reporters as he hobbled out of the locker room on crutches "It's tough, man, I don't want to accept, it but you have to."
Unfortunately for Gary, he will also have to accept the fact that his value on the open market has just dropped considerably.
During the offseason Gary rejected a a four-year, $10 million extension that included a $1.5 million signing bonus, preferring to test his worth in the free agent market at season's end. Now, with his football future in the hands of Denver's finest surgeons, Gary will have the next three to four months to second-guess that decision.
