HEAD COACH MIKE SHANAHAN POSTGAME QUOTES

On the play of the Broncos in their first preseason game
"I thought overall our defense was pretty sharp. Offensively, we were a little sloppy and made some mistakes -penalties and obviously the turnovers. Mostly, we'll take a look at the film, and for the second, third and fourth-team guys, we'll get a chance to look at two, three and four (on the depth chart) at a number of positions and get a chance to see how they did."

On rookie WR Darius Watts
"Darius went out early. His shoulder was a little bit sore. He didn't practice the last couple of days, and he said he felt pretty good coming into today. I was pleased he went in there but was a little bit disappointed that he couldn't play longer than he did. He had a lot of guts to go in there with a sore shoulder."

On the knee injury LB Jashon Sykes suffered vs. Washington
"Right now, you can't tell until you get an MRI. But right now, we are just hoping it's a second degree MCL (sprain), which usually means two-three weeks."

On his impressions of Watts thus far in training camp
"He's got some speed. He's got the ability to beat [defensive backs] one on one. He's got great speed. You have to feel comfortable with the offense, can't make mistakes and can't have any dropped balls. That just takes some time. I see a big upside there. It's pretty impressive he played when he was hurt."

On RB Quentin Griffin making some big plays
"I really expect that from him. There were a couple [of plays] where he got tackled, and I wouldn't be surprised after he settles down a little a bit that on a couple of those passes, he breaks those tackles. But we expect that from him."

On the competition at strongside linebacker between Terry Pierce and Jashon Sykes and the battle at weakside
"Both guys are competing at the SAM linebacker position. We want to evaluate how we do in the preseason. We have a lot of confidence in both players, and now that Jashon will be gone a couple of weeks, Terry will get some reps. It's a very close race, and until it's the end of preseason, I can't tell you which direction we will go. It's very similar on the other side with Donnie Spragan and D.J. [Williams]. There's competition there. Donnie played exceptionally well last year. D.J. has some speed, and he's got some football instincts."

On how rookie QB Matt Mauck fared in his first NFL action
"It's tough for a young guy coming in. They threw a lot at him. He made a few mistakes out there. Then you've got the pressure of a 40-second [play] clock and live bullets for the first time out there. He's probably not really happy with himself, but that's pretty typical of being a quarterback. Hopefully, with four more preseason games, he gets better."
