Camp Notes - Aug. 19

News and Notes from the Denver Broncos Training Camp, August 19, 2004.

Cold and wet weather forced a relocation of the Broncos morning practice session on Thursday as the team transferred to the climate controlled environment of the indoor bubble at the Family Fun Center.

According to head coach Mike Shanahan the move indoors limited very little of what  was originally scheduled to be run.

"We can do eveything except for a couple of special-team drills, so we get a full workout in here," said Shanahan. "It's the same surface we'll play on against Seattle, so it's pretty productive."

Rookie quarterback Bradlee Van Pelt, who has seen very little time so far in camp will not be seeing any reps soon according to Shanahan. The former CSU standout is not scheduled for any playing time this week against Seattle.

"It's usually a little bit tougher as time goes on to get quarterbacks the reps they need, but you never know," said Shanahan. "If somebody goes down, he's got to be ready to go. He's not getting a lot of reps during the week, so it's kind of hard to go out there and play at a certain level when you don't get many reps."

Van Pelt, who many feel will be signed to the Broncos practice squad, did see limited action during the afternoon session, connecting on a nice pass to Adrian Madise, but was also intercepted by safety John Lynch

Feeling that the team was not playing up to it's full potential during the afternoon session, Lynch huddled the team together for a motivational pep talk.

"It just started to get a little sloppy and I felt like something needed to be said," Lynch told reporters. "I learned long ago that if it's important to you and if you feel like it's the time, it's not something contrived, then you just do it."

The former Tampa Bay captain hopes his pep talk will transfer itself to game situations as the Broncos look for their first win of the preseason against the Seattle Seahawks this Saturday night.

The last chance for fans to attend training camp will be during tomorrows morning session. The practice, which was originally scheduled for 8:30 am has been moved back to 10:00 am. An Aug. 29 practice scheduled for Invesco Field has been cancelled.

Defensive end Clint Mitchell left the field midway through the afternoon session with a sprained ankle. His status for this weeks game is uncertain.

"I don't know how bad it is," said head coach Mike Shanahan. "It looked like it was pretty sore, so we'll just have to wait and see. It doesn't look good right now though."
