Broncos make initial cuts

The Denver Broncos trimmed their roster today, waiving 11-players, placing three on the IR list and one on the reserve/retired list.

As expected, the Denver Broncos cut their 2004 roster by waiving eleven players, placing three on the reserve/injured list and one on reserve/retired, as mandated by league rules today which limit teams to a 65-man playing roster. NFL Europe allocations do not count against the roster until the final cutdown this Sunday, so Denver will take a 75-player roster into their final preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Jimmy Spencer, who had played four of his twelve NFL seasons with the Broncos, was placed on the reserve/retired list. He will remain with the club serving as assistant defensive backs coach. Spencer had been the the first player/coach since Dan Reeves performed double duties with the Dallas Cowboys in 1970-71.

The three players placed on the reserve/injured list include running back Mike Anderson, cornerback Jermaine Chatman and wide receiver B.J. Johnson. Anderson, in his fifth year out of Utah, suffered a groin injury the fourth quarter of Denver's last preseason game against Houston, while Chatman, in his first year out of Arizona, suffered a broken left hand in the same game. Johnson, a rookie wide receiver out of Texas, injured his left ankle early in training camp and did not participated the remainder of camp.

Once the roster has been trimmed to the 53-man limit on Sunday, the team may sign up to eight players to their practice squad the following day.
