Monday Night Bungle

The Denver Broncos were supposed to have their way on Monday Night against Cincinnati. But someone forgot to tell the Bengals, as they beat the Broncos in every way possible on the way to a 23-10 rout. Turnovers, penalties, dropped passes, blown coverages, poor field position - you name a mistake and the Broncos had it all in the nationally televised game.

Miserable Monday - Denver Post - Bill Williamson
Tuesday, October 26, 2004 - The Bengals rarely play "Monday Night Football" games in Cincinnati. Something was out of sync as the Broncos played their sloppiest game of the season in a 23-10 loss to the Bengals before a raucous and rare Monday night crowd at Paul Brown Stadium. The Broncos fell to 5-2 and saw their AFC West lead slip to one game over 4-3 San Diego entering consecutive home games against Atlanta and Houston.

Bungle against Bengals won't do - Denver Post - Jim Armstrong
Tuesday, October 26, 2004 - They didn't, did they? They couldn't have, could they? You don't lose to the Bengals. It simply isn't done. Not on Monday night, not on Sunday afternoon, not on Oct. 25, not on the 12th of Never. You might stumble against the Bengals, but you don't fall. You might get off to a slow start, might fall behind by a field goal here, a touchdown there. But you don't lose. Not to the Bengals. Mike Shanahan, Mastermind, strategist supreme and, apparently, part-time motivator, said all week you can lose to the Bengals. But it's his job to say that kind of stuff. That doesn't mean you do it. Not unless you want an all-expense-paid trip to the waiver wire, you don't.

Griffin could miss season because of knee injury - Denver Post - Jim Armstrong
Tuesday, October 26, 2004 - Quentin Griffin was supposed to salvage his season as a kick returner after losing his starting tailback job. Griffin's season likely has ended on a kick return. Initial indications are Griffin suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, which would end his season. Denver coach Mike Shanahan said the team's training staff believes Griffin suffered the ACL injury. The team is expected to know the extent of the injury by Wednesday. Usual recovery time for a major ACL knee injury is six to 12 months.

Johnson proves champ in battle with Bailey - Denver Post - Anthony Cotton
Tuesday, October 26, 2004 - Rather than send any special deliveries, for once Chad Johnson decided to let his play do the talking. That, in turn, meant Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey was presented with a rare challenge. The result was a classic one-on-one battle, a duel that, like most everything else Monday night, went the Cincinnati Bengals' way. With a national audience and record crowd of 65,806 at Paul Brown Stadium looking on for the Bengals' first Monday night home game in 15 seasons, Johnson played like the all-star player many - most notably, Johnson himself - purport him to be.

Offense has ghoulish look - Denver Post - Patrick Saunders
Tuesday, October 26, 2004 - A Halloween horror show came six days early for the Broncos' offense Monday night in a 23-10 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Playing before a crowd clad - fittingly enough - in orange and black, the Broncos' offense was haunted by old ghosts. That is, missed opportunities, mistakes and a failure to put points on the board. Those were the same things that hurt the offense early in the season when Denver was winning on defense alone.

Interception gives O'Neal a payback - Denver Post - Mike Dyer
Tuesday, October 26, 2004 - Deltha O'Neal was ready for Monday night. With 7:28 left in the first half, the Bengals cornerback intercepted a pass by Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer at the Bengals' 47 and returned it 29 yards to the Denver 24. He added a little extra to the play when he raised his hand in celebration. "Oh, man, it felt great," O'Neal said. "It was for my brother back home. Any way to make it easier for the offense." When asked further about the interception, O'Neal admitted he had his former team in mind. "I know, I had to - I wanted Mike (Shanahan) to see that," O'Neal said. "I know he probably didn't like it."

Rout of order - Rocky Mountain News - Jeff Legwold
October 26, 2004 - As expected, a team did crumble under the glare of prime time at Paul Brown Stadium on Monday night. It's just somebody forgot to tell the Cincinnati Bengals it was supposed to be them. And by the time they were done, the Bengals were posing, primping and strutting for a national television audience. Yes, it was the Bengals who looked composed and comfortable as they methodically dispatched the Denver Broncos 23-10 in front of a stadium- record crowd of 65,806.

Droughns' gains come to naught - Rocky Mountain News - Lee Rasizer
October 26, 2004 - It was set up as a classic mismatch: Denver's revved- up running attack that had vaulted itself to No. 1 in the league against Cincinnati's porous rush defense. It didn't exactly turn out that way Monday night. Reuben Droughns did post his third consecutive triple-digit rushing game with 110 yards on 24 carries. The Broncos did manage 4.7 yards an attempt.

Carson has been starring in tonight shows - Rocky Mountain News - Marc Lancaster
October 26, 2004 - In college football, playing games under the lights is nothing special. In the NFL, it's an entirely different story. The night games are the showcase games, and Carson Palmer has adapted pretty well. "We're pretty good at night," Palmer said. After shepherding the Cincinnati Bengals to a 23-10 victory against the Denver Broncos on Monday night, Palmer is 2-0 as a professional quarterback in the evening.

Bailey can't keep up with Johnson - Rocky Mountain News - Lee Rasizer
October 26, 2004 - Champ Bailey normally is a lock-down cornerback for Denver, but for the majority of Monday night's game, Chad Johnson found the key in their mano-a-mano matchup. Johnson, a flashy, brash Bengals receiver, beat Bailey for a 50-yard touchdown as part of a seven-catch, 149-yard performance. It was one of two 50-yarders by Johnson, a 2003 Pro Bowl selection, during Cincinnati's 23-10 victory. His 149 yards accounted for almost all of quarterback Carson Palmer's 198 passing yards.

Lincicome: Beware the team with nothing to lose - Rocky Mountain News - Bernie Lincicome
October 26, 2004 - Monday Night Football found the afterthought Bengals pretty much where it left them 15 years ago, down the Ohio River a little farther, in a newer stadium, but otherwise as appeal-impaired as ever, leaving all the heavy lifting to the Broncos. Unequal to the task, Denver played as if it were looking for a bus to dive under, or a hole to crawl into. It was as if, in some pre-Halloween prank, the teams switched uniforms before the game, with the child quarterback of Cincinnati playing like the veteran of Denver, the top-ranked defense merely rank, the mastermind being out mastered by the mild mannered.

Not ready for prime time - Daily Camera - Ryan Thorburn
October 26, 2004 - It was an ode to the odor of Monday night's game. Jake Plummer was an inaccurate passer between the lines, and the Broncos' unofficial poet in the locker room. "I heard the term 'trap game,'" Plummer elegantly stated after Denver's puzzling 23-10 loss to Cincinnati at a pumped-up Paul Brown Stadium celebrating the city's first Monday Night Football game since 1989. "I think it was a crap game. We played like (expletive)." That about sums it up.

O'Neal makes his point - Daily Camera - Ryan Thorburn
October 26, 2004 - Hey, over here. Look at me. I can still play this game. As a cornerback! That was basically the message Deltha O'Neal sent to Mike Shanahan from across the field on Monday night when he raised his right hand in the air after picking off a Jake Plummer pass in the second quarter while returning the turnover 28 yards to the Denver 24-yard line. O'Neal, of course, was traded by the Broncos to Cincinnati during the offseason after falling out of favor with Shanahan and being benched as a starting cornerback and forced to play receiver, a switch the former first-round pick had no interest in making.

Thorburn: Broncos missed all the warning signs - Daily Camera - Ryan Thorburn
October 26, 2004 - The Broncos had all of Sunday and most of Monday to digest the surprising scores from the comfort of their hotel rooms. It turned out that the warnings were as hard to swallow as the famous chili here. Cincinnati 23, Denver 10 — the lowly Bengals were the ones ready for prime time, handing the mighty Broncos a humbling loss.

Lights, camera, satisfaction - Cincinnati Enquirer - Mark Curnutte
Tuesday, October 26, 2004 - The Bengals are the Ready for Prime Time Players. They defeated Denver 23-10 on Monday night, their first appearance at home on the NFL's biggest stage since 1989. Both of the Bengals victories this season have now come in night games. They defeated Miami on Sunday night, Sept. 19. The Bengals' maligned defense held the Broncos 16 points below their average and 28 yards below their league-leading rush average. Offensively, the Bengals had big showings from their two biggest stars. Wide receiver Chad Johnson out-dueled Denver cornerback Champ Bailey, catching seven passes for 149 yards and one touchdown, and tailback Rudi Johnson ran 24 times for 119 yards, including a 36-yard touchdown.

Tummy ache for Broncos' Bailey - Cincinnati Enquirer - Kevin Kelly
Tuesday, October 26, 2004 - What the Browns did to Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson eight days earlier in Cleveland, the Broncos' four-time Pro Bowl cornerback couldn't Monday at Paul Brown Stadium. Johnson caught four passes for 116 yards and one touchdown in the first half alone. By the end of the third quarter, Johnson had seven receptions for 149 yards - his final tally - three shy of his career high. It marked Johnson's 11th career 100-yard receiving game, but first this season.

Broncos have a system - Cincinnati Enquirer - Paul Daugherty
Tuesday, October 26, 2004 - One of these years, sooner than later, a fourth-string fullback for an Arena League team is going to be heading out the door of his room at the Motel 6, looking for offseason work loading refrigerators on to boxcars, when the Denver Broncos call his room telephone. Twelve months later, he will run for 1,400 yards and score 20 touchdowns. There is a factory, right? It's out there in the Rocky Mountains, somewhere between Pike's Peak and the Coors Brewery. Ordinary men - 5 feet 10, 160 pounds, winged tips, horn-rims, pocket protectors - go in. They come out as Terrell Davis. Or Olandis Gary. Or Mike Anderson or Clinton Portis or Reuben Droughns. Who is Reuben Droughns?

O'Neal picks fine time to intercept his former teammate - Cincinnati Enquirer - Colleen Kane
Tuesday, October 26, 2004 - If ever there were a good time for Bengals cornerback Deltha O'Neal to get his first interception as a Bengal, it was Monday against the team that tried to turn him into a wide receiver and then dropped him for a draft pick a few months later. O'Neal picked off a Jake Plummer pass to Ashley Lelie at the Broncos' 47-yard line and returned it 29 yards midway through the second quarter. The interception set up a 53-yard field goal to put the Bengals ahead 10-0 with 5:41 to play in the half.

Bengals put on show in rare 'MNF' spotlight, upset Broncos - SportsLine.com
Oct. 26, 2004 - With two reputations on the line -- his team's and his own -- Chad got the best of Champ and turned the Bengals into a prime-time success. Chad Johnson left cornerback Champ Bailey face-down in his tracks on a 50-yard touchdown catch that got the Bengals revved for a 23-10 victory over the Denver Broncos in their long-awaited return to Monday Night Football. The Bengals (2-4) hadn't played on the Monday night stage for 12 years, the longest such exile in the league. A crowd of 65,806 -- the biggest ever to see a Bengals game in Cincinnati -- was hoping just to avoid embarrassment. A chatty receiver gave them so much more.

A Night to Forget - DenverBroncos.com - Andrew Mason
Tuesday, October 26, 2004 - Maybe it was when Champ Bailey tripped and fell to the ground, leaving Bengals receiver Chad Johnson wide open to easily grab a 50-yard touchdown reception just 6:34 into the game. Maybe it was when the officials initially ruled that Jake Plummer completed a 42-yard pass to Ashley Lelie, only to have the call overturned by a quick Bengals instant-replay challenge that showed the ball coming out of his grasp as it hit the FieldTurf. Or maybe it was in the second half, when Cincinnati running back Rudi Johnson wore down Denver's defensive resistance, gaining 76 yards on his last nine carries after amassing just 34 on his first 15. The collective result of these circumstances and many more was a humbling 23-10 defeat to Cincinnati, a night of plays that went awry and opportunities that the Bengals converted and the Broncos couldn't.

Bengals' Early Deep Attack Frustrates Broncos - DenverBroncos.com - Andrew Mason
Tuesday, October 26, 2004 - The Bengals wasted little time trying to turn Monday's game against Denver into a duel of big plays. "You figured they were going to do something (for) prime-time television, try to make something happen early," linebacker Al Wilson said. "They did that by going deep. They made the plays when they had to." Cincinnati's first four possessions were punctuated by a slew of deep passes from second-year quarterback Carson Palmer. Three of those dice rolls came up double-sixes, with two 50-yard bombs from Palmer to Chad Johnson and another pass for T.J. Houshmandzadeh that drew a 31-yard interference penalty against Willie Middlebrooks.

Monday, October 25, 2004 - Before the start of Denver's only Monday Night Football contest Head Coach Mike Shanahan deactivated the following players: Garrison Hearst, Chris Young, Lenny Walls, Jashon Sykes, Cornell Green, Darius Holland and Trevor Pryce. Dwayne Carswell was not with the team as he served his one-game suspension. The game was started with the temperature at 61 degrees with 45 percent humidity. The Bengals won the coin toss and received the opening kickoff.

Broncos-Bengals Notebook: Denver Hammered in Field Position - DenverBroncos.com - Andrew Mason
Monday, October 25, 2004 - To say the Broncos had a disadvantage in field position would be a gross underestimation. A poisonous cocktail of penalties, turnovers and three Bengals punts that dropped inside the Denver 20-yard-line forced the Broncos to spend much of the game battling merely to emerge from the shadow of their goalpost. Four of Denver's 10 drives started from within 10 yards of Denver's goal line, and the Broncos' best drive-start position came early in the fourth quarter, when Denver opened at its own 30-yard-line. Denver's average drive-start position was at its own 18-yard-line. The Bengals was at their 46, and five of their 11 drives began on the Broncos' side of midfield. "It was very pivotal," linebacker Al Wilson said. "They had the ball in great position and they utilized it. We didn't."
