ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos on Tuesday signed free-agent cornerback Rod Babers, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Babers (5-9, 185 pounds) is in his third NFL season and has played seven career regular-season games (0 starts), posting four tackles (all solo) and five special-teams stops. The 24-year-old spent most of his first two seasons with Detroit after being selected by the New York Giants in the fourth round (123rd overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft from the University of Texas.
After playing two games and making one tackle for the Lions in 2004, Babers signed with Tampa Bay as a free agent on April 4 but was waived by the Buccaneers on April 25. Detroit claimed Babers off waivers from the Giants on Sept. 8, 2003, and he appeared in five games to record three tackles (all solo) and five special-teams stops for the Lions as a rookie.
Babers was a three-year starter at Texas who was a first-team All-Big 12 Conference choice and Jim Thorpe Award (nation's best defensive back) semifinalist as a senior. He totaled 131 career tackles (104 solo) and five interceptions (176 yds.), including three returned for touchdowns, to set a Longhorns career record with a 35.2-yard interception return average.
A USA Today honorable mention All-American as a senior at Lamar High School in Houston, Babers had three defensive touchdowns (2 INTs, 1 fumble return) during his final prep season. Roderick Henri Babers was born Oct. 6, 1980, in Houston.
