Coming into the Denver Broncos 2005 training camp, wide receiver Todd Devoe was barely a blip on the radar screen. Like many other guys, he was just hoping to get noticed and compete for a roster spot, after spending last year on the Baltimore Raven's practice squad.
One sure fire way to get some attention is to score a 92-yard touchdown reception, so in his first pre-season game as a Bronco he pulled in a Matt Mauck pass, slipped a tackle at the eight-yard line and was off to the races, or at least a possible roster spot.
"In college I had a 99 (yard touchdown), so I still have a few more yards to go," Devoe said jokingly.
While the 92-yard highlight may have gotten him noticed, Devoe understands his work is far from over, and he has to "keep making plays, catch every ball, make every block, know my assignments and stay on top of everything."
Devoe is right about the need to stay on top of his game, the fifth wide receiver spot is already stacked with several guys who are capable of playing at the professional level. Triandos Luke and Charlie Adams look to be his toughest competition, both having a year under their belts playing on special teams and wide receiver.
But the first-year player out of Central Missouri State doesn't seem worried – he seems motivated.
With only one pre-season game in the books, there's still a lot of football to be played, and more than enough time to for the coaching staff to evaluate their talent, but if Devoe continues the consistency he's shown the past couple weeks, he may find it hard not to get noticed.
Especially as the fifth wide receiver.
