ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos on Wednesday signed free-agent wide receiver David Terrell, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Terrell (6-3, 212 pounds), is a fifth-year player who joins the Broncos from New England, which released him Saturday after he signed with the team as a free agent on April 5. He spent his first four years with Chicago and was selected by the Bears in the first round (eighth overall) of the 2001 NFL Draft.
The 26-year-old Terrell has totaled 128 receptions for 1,602 yards (12.5 avg.) with nine touchdowns in 53 career regular-season games (29 starts). He also has made two catches for 18 yards (9.0 avg.) in a postseason start for the Bears during the 2001 season.
In 2004, he led Chicago in receiving yards by posting a career-high 699 yards on 42 catches (16.6 avg.) with one touchdown in 16 regular-season games (15 starts). Terrell, who has played all 16 games in three of his four professional seasons, added a career-best 43 receptions for the Bears in 2003.
The first wide receiver selected in the 2001 NFL Draft, Terrell recorded the best rookie season for a Chicago wide receiver since Willie Gault in 1983. He ranked third on the Bears in catches (34) and receiving yards (415) while placing second in touchdown receptions (4) as a first-year player in 2001.
Terrell was a two-time first-team All-Big Ten Conference selection at the University of Michigan and finished his career ranked second in school history in receptions (152) and third in receiving yards (2,317). He was a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award (nation's best receiver) and a consensus All-American as a junior, his final year at Michigan, after setting a school single-season record with 1,130 receiving yards.
Terrell earned first-team All-America honors from USA Today as a senior at Huguenot High School in Richmond, Va., and finished his prep career with 108 receptions for 2,546 yards (23.6 avg.) with 41 touchdowns. David Terrell was born March 13, 1979, in Richmond, Va.
