Broncos Update Insider - Wednesday, Oct. 5

Offensive guard Dwayne Carswell (in photo) had a couple of touchdown catches on lineman-eligible plays against Jacksonville. The Denver Broncos will probably continue to use the former tight end in different packages. He has pretty good hands and could be a target in the red zone. Check out today's Broncos Update Insider for the latest on Carswell and all the other Broncos.

The Denver Broncos don't know yet if Champ Bailey will play Sunday. If not, a pair of rookie cornerbacks will again see a lot of playing time.

Darrent Williams and Domonique Foxworth could be Denver's starting cornerbacks against Washington. Williams missed last week's game against Jacksonville with an ankle injury, but should return to the lineup. Foxworth made his first career start in his place and the coaching staff named him their defensive player of the game against Jacksonville. Foxworth had an interception and a fumble recovery against the Jaguars.

Williams had already displaced Lenny Walls in the starting lineup and Foxworth's performance might have moved him up the depth chart too.

"We don't go over starting roles and who's going to start, but I feel like we have some depth there," Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said. Bailey will be evaluated through the week, but Shanahan said Monday he has no idea if Bailey will be ready or not.

If Bailey does start, the Broncos still have decisions to make. They have to determine if Foxworth or Williams would start opposite Bailey, and who would be their nickel cornerback.

The Broncos have liked Foxworth and Williams since early in training camp. Williams was a second-round pick and quickly took over the nickel cornerback job. Foxworth was a third-round pick who moved ahead of fellow third-round pick Karl Paymah on the depth chart before camp even started, and then was very impressive during camp practices and preseason games.

"Half the battle is lining up right and these guys are smart players," Bailey said. "They line up right and they don't make a lot of mental mistakes."

NOTES, QUOTES

--Running back Tatum Bell will probably continue to get carries in Denver's backfield. He had 15 carries against Jacksonville in relief of Mike Anderson because he was hot early on. The Broncos haven't used a committee at tailback in Mike Shanahan's tenure, but it sounds like that is changing.

"You'll probably see that quite a bit through the season," Shanahan said. "I can't tell you the numbers, because sometimes a guy has the hot hand. But it'll be a little different than what we've done in the past."

-- WR Ashley Lelie hasn't had much of an impact this season. He caught only one pass against Jacksonville and hasn't had any deep receptions. But the Broncos have thrown his way and insist he's close to getting a couple of long plays.

"What you have to do is be patient," Lelie said. "Those plays will come."

PLAYER PERSONNEL NOTES

--OG Dwayne Carswell had a couple of touchdown catches on lineman-eligible plays against Jacksonville. The Broncos will probably continue to use the former tight end in different packages. He has pretty good hands and could be a target in the red zone.
--LB Louis Green was inactive against Jacksonville with a hamstring injury, as was LB Patrick Chukwurah with thigh and ankle injuries. That left the team with four linebackers. The Broncos need at least one of those players to return next week so they aren't so short at linebacker.
--DE Marco Coleman was active for Denver's game on Sunday for the first time since the season opener. He had a quarterback hurry. The Broncos know they can count on long-time veteran Coleman to be ready when they need him.
--WR Charlie Adams returned punts and kickoffs with Darrent Williams inactive against Jacksonville. Adams was impressive on returns in the preseason, but didn't make much happen against the Jaguars' solid coverage units.
--QB Jake Plummer has an important special teams role as K Jason Elam's holder. Elam missed two field goals against the Jaguars, although he didn't blame the holds. The Broncos need Plummer and Elam to be on the same page.
