Quarterback Jay Cutler was promoted to second-team quarterback and had a big preseason debut against Detroit. Cutler will get plenty of playing time in the preseason because it will be the Broncos' chance to evaluate him before the regular season starts.

--Tight end Tony Scheffler caught four passes for 54 yards in Denver's first preseason game.

--Receiver Brandon Marshall, who was making a push for the third receiver job, suffered a knee injury against Detroit and could miss a couple weeks. The injury isn't considered serious, however.

--Defensive lineman Elvis Dumervil had a solid game against Detroit. The Broncos are thin at defensive tackle and need Dumervil to provide some depth.

--Linebacker Cameron Vaughn got a lot of playing time with the second-team defense. He is having a good camp and could make the team.

--Defensive tackle Antwon Burton will benefit from Gerard Warren's absence while he recovers from dislocated toe. Burton is a big body in the middle and has been playing with the second-team defense.

--Tailback Mike Bell's fumble against Detroit probably won't cost him the starting job for now. But his margin of error got smaller after that play.
