Broncos v. Rams - Game Plan and Matchups

Check out the game plan and key matchups as the Denver Broncos face the St. Louis Rams.

GAME PLAN: Denver will have a tough time this week because they are facing a first-time head coach, Scott Linehan. Last year the Broncos faced a similar situation against Miami's Nick Saban and were beaten soundly. The Broncos respect the improvements St. Louis has made in its run defense, but Denver's game is running the ball and they won't get away with that. The Broncos' new approach on defense -- not sending as many blitzes and letting the front four rush the quarterback -- will be tested. If they can't get pressure on Marc Bulger, that will make it difficult for the cornerbacks.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Rams WR Torry Holt vs. Broncos CB Champ Bailey. Bailey is coming off perhaps the best season of his impressive career, and he starts this season with one of his biggest challenges. Holt is capable of having a big day against anyone, so Bailey will have to be on top of his game.

--Broncos C Tom Nalen vs. Rams NT Jimmy Kennedy. The Broncos want to get their running game going early. Nalen is the anchor of the line and his matchup against Kennedy, a large former first-round pick, will be crucial to opening up holes for Denver's tailbacks.

--Broncos DT Gerard Warren vs. Rams LG Richie Incognito. Warren is coming off a dislocated toe. He might not be 100 percent but the Broncos are expecting big things out of him. Incognito is a first-year starter so Denver might want to exploit that matchup.

INJURY IMPACT: DE Courtney Brown is practicing this week but he's questionable for the game. Brown had arthroscopic knee surgery early in training camp. The game is on artificial turf, which might give the Broncos another reason to hold Brown out another week.

--WR Brandon Marshall is back at practice and should be available to play against the Rams.
