Mike Shanahan has failed in another quarterback experiment. I'm fairly certain that the man who was formerly known as "The Mastermind" has not forgotten the Brian Griese era (or error, as it should be known), but he cannot allow for lightning to strike this organization twice.
Just like that, in the blink of an eye, the Broncos' season was finished, through, kaput, emptied, done.
At 7-3 and trying to find answers, one question is abundantly clear - Can this team win a championship?
The answer, sadly, is no. Not as it's currently being run. This is a team overrun with distrust, mistakes and misleadings.
We may make the playoffs. We may get a home game in the wild card round. But we will not be winning the division this year, and we will not make it to the AFC Championship Game. And a home game does not appear to matter.
Against the AFC's best, at home, twice, we've crumbled under the pressure.
Against the AFC's best, despite having a lead in the second half, we couldn't get a stop when we needed it, and we couldn't get the offense moving when it had to happen. It's happened twice now.
That being said, it's time to start preparing for the future.
It's time to see what Jay Cutler brings to the table.
Think about it - we spent some draft picks to make sure that number 6 would wear predominantly Orange and Blue, and we have barely gotten a glimpse of him. My reasoning for sticking with Plummer is A) his winning percentage and B) the team's ability to pull out wins. However, we can't expect to win in the playoffs when our quarterback throws to the guys in the wrong uniforms in our own end of the field.
This isn't all Jake's fault. I want to be clear on that as well. The defense had a 24-7 lead in the third quarter and couldn't hold on to it. The coaching staff apparently refuses to make adjustments at halftime and at the end of a third quarter where San Diego ran wild. But it's a combination of all these things that make it imperative that we get a look at the future.
Coach Shanahan, it's time. Part of the problem is your distrust of your quarterback, your unwillingness to let the reigns out on the man who is supposed to lead this team. The safe passes, the second-guesses and the reigned in offense is kneecapping our quarterback and hamstringing our chances. You trusted enough in the ability of Cutler to move up in the draft and select him, you trusted him enough to elevate him to second string on the depth chart, and you trusted him enough to let go of fan favorite Bradlee Van Pelt. Make the move that fans in Denver have wanted you to make since April 29th.
We wasted entire seasons because of the Brian Griese mistake and your refusal to admit he wasn't the man for the job. Don't do the same with Plummer. Cutler should start in two weeks, against Seattle, at Mile High. Make the right move.
