The Broncos drafted two ends, which was a bit surprising. They selected Florida's Jarvis Moss in the first round, then Texas' Tim Crowder in the second round. That isn't much of a bother to Lang, who was on the same of the spectrum as Washington's first-round pick in 1997.
"I was a first-round pick who came in and kicked somebody else out," Lang said. "That's how things in this business go. It doesn't bother me, but it's like what are you going to do? Are you going to pitch a tent or are you going to go out there and work?
Lang and Ebenezer Ekuban were the starting ends last year. Lang wasn't supposed to be a starter, but Courtney Brown missed all season with a knee injury.
Lang got used to starting and said he wants to retain his spot. To do so he'll have to hold off a couple of fast, athletic players who are going to play a lot regardless of whether they start.
"If I have any advantage, I have knowledge," Lang said. "I'm like an old lefty pitcher. Crafty."
Lang said he won't sabotage the rookies. He said his ultimate remaining goal is to win a Super Bowl, and he knows Moss and Crowder should help the defense.
"I'm not selfish," Lang said. "Everybody's time is going to come.
"I will help him out," Lang said of Moss. "I'd rather see a young person succeed. By not telling him the finer points I'm not cheating him, I'm cheating the team."
Notes and Quotes
--The Broncos added five undrafted free agents: Auburn offensive lineman Tim Duckworth, Florida defensive tackle Steven Harris, Hampton wide receiver Marquay McDaniel, Wisconsin safety Roderick Rogers and Texas running back Selvin Young.
The Broncos have had good luck with undrafted free agents. Receiver Rod Smith and offensive tackle Matt Lepsis are starters who weren't drafted. Last year, defensive tackle Antwon Burton and running back Mike Bell contributed as undrafted rookies.
--The Broncos waived running back Cedric Cobbs. Cobbs was supposed to challenge for the starting tailback job last year and had a good preseason. He disappeared after the preseason, however, and had only three carries for nine yards during the season.
--Denver released punter Eddie Johnson. Johnson was signed to a futures contract in January.
The Broncos didn't need Johnson after signing Todd Sauerbrun. Denver also has Paul Ernster on the roster. Ernster was Denver's punter last year and will compete for a roster spot in camp.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "I'm not going to say I'm going to lay down and give him my job. There's going to be competition." -- Broncos defensive end Kenard Lang on the team drafting Florida's Jarvis Moss in the first round.
