Foxworth still waiting for chance

When the Denver Broncos signed cornerback Dre Bly, Domonique Foxworth lost his chance to start.

Foxworth was penciled into the starting lineup after his friend, Darrent Williams, was shot and killed on Jan. 1. The Broncos recognized they needed some depth at cornerback, and found that the Lions' asking price for Bly in a trade wasn't that steep.

"I don't think we went into the off-season knowing we could acquire a guy like Dre Bly," safety John Lynch said.

So Foxworth, who got a vote of confidence from Broncos coach Mike Shanahan in the off-season, moved down a spot on the depth chart before he ever got a chance to enter the season as the starter.

Foxworth, who has developed into an effective nickel cornerback in his two seasons, said he was going to ignore the depth chart and keep competing for a starting spot.

"Crazy things happen," Foxworth said. "I'll be ready when my opportunity comes."

Foxworth will get plenty of playing time, as usual, against multiple receiver sets. He should continue to improve with that experience, and the Broncos won't be in trouble if Bly or Champ Bailey misses some time with an injury.

"I definitely feel I've proven I'm a quality player and I'm still getting better and I feel that I'll be one of the better players at my position in this league when I fully reach my potential," Foxworth said.
