The Broncos wanted a big defensive tackle, and they couldn't have found one much bigger than Sam Adams.

Denver signed Adams, a three-time Pro Bowler, to anchor the middle of the defense. The Broncos have a new defensive scheme under assistant head coach/defense Jim Bates, where big tackles that can occupy blockers are at a premium.

"Obviously everyone knows what he's done," Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said. "He's a part of our football team now. It'll be interesting to see what kind of shape he's in now and how he'll contribute."

Adams weighted about 345 pounds for his first minicamp practice, about five pounds less than he was last season. The Broncos want him at about 335 pounds, and Adams said he could get down to that weight.

"We'd like him at a weight where he can play at least 28-30 snaps a game," Bates said. "We have to get him at a weight where his endurance will be a factor going into the fourth quarter."

The weight loss might help Adams' knees. He had arthroscopic knee surgery after the season, but he has no structural damage and isn't worried about his knees bothering him during the season.

The Broncos were willing to take the gamble that Adams can be productive for at least one more season. If he is, the Broncos added a big piece to their defense.

"I think there's some tread left on those tires," assistant defensive line coach Bill Johnson said. "We'll see."

Notes and Quotes

--The Broncos traded a sixth-round pick in next year's draft to St. Louis for defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy. Like Sam Adams, who the Broncos recently signed, Kennedy is big and can fit in the middle of assistant head coach/defense Jim Bates' scheme.

--On the final day of the Broncos' recent minicamp, Mike Shanahan called the team up after the pre-practice stretch and informed the players they had the rest of the day off. The players celebrated the reprieve, and then bolted off the field.

"It's a little bone thrown their way because they've had some great practices," Shanahan said.

--Defensive tackle Sam Adams wore No. 63 his first few days as a Bronco. His familiar No. 95 is being worn by rookie end Jarvis Moss, and Adams sounded interested in getting the number from him.

"We'll see about that," Adams said.

--The Broncos' coaches have a few weeks off. Their next organized team activity is a mandatory veteran minicamp, which starts on July 9. The players will continue to participate in the off-season workout program.
