Broncos Update Insider

After watching defensive tackle Sam Adams for a few days, the Denver Broncos were pleased at what they saw.

Adams, who was down about 10 pounds from last year's playing weight of 355, moved well through the team's most recent minicamp after he signed with the Broncos.

There weren't many big defensive tackles that the Broncos could have picked up to start right away, so they were fortunate Adams chose them over other suitors. New assistant head coach/defense Jim Bates' scheme employs big tackles to occupy blockers while linebackers make plays.

"I know coach Bates likes big boys up there, and he fits the bill," safety John Lynch said about Adams. "Sam's been a good player in this league for a long time. The more of those guys we can have on our side, that's a good thing."

Adams said he would get his weight to about 335, which is what the Broncos want him to play at. Adams said he has played well at 355 pounds and at 335 pounds, so he didn't see the weight as a big deal, but there will be some benefit.

"I'll be a lot lighter this year so I can breathe in practice," Adams said.

Being lighter could help Adams' knees. Adams had offseason arthroscopic knee surgery. Although he didn't have any structural damage, being lighter could help him get through this season, and maybe more.

"I hope he is (lighter) because he's getting older and doesn't have to carry so much," said Broncos assistant defensive line coach Bill Johnson.

--The Broncos' coaches spend most of the month of June away from the facilities. Head coach Mike Shanahan wants the staff to be fresh by the time the team holds its training camp in late July. The coaches have to be back in the office for a minicamp from July 9-11.

The Broncos players are still participating in the strength and conditioning program.

--Broncos single game tickets go on sale July 28. All of Denver's games sell out, but a few single tickets are available to the public every year.

--Broncos center Greg Eslinger was named All-NFL Europa. Eslinger was a 2006 draft pick, and the Broncos wanted him to get some experience in Europe after sitting out all last season with a shoulder injury.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "(Assistant head coach/defense Jim Bates) was saying there's competition across the board. The best man gets the spot. I'm working hard to get it." -- Linebacker Eddie Moore on the competition at strongside linebacker.
