Broncos Update Insider - 10/23

Injuries and key performances from some newcomers to the Denver Broncos highlight today's edition of the Broncos Update Insider.

The Denver Broncos' win on Sunday brought a few more key injuries.

Running back Travis Henry left the game after the third quarter with bruised ribs. Although Mike Shanahan said he thought Henry did not have any fractured ribs, he still wasn't sure how Henry would respond to the injury this week.

"We're hoping it's not too serious, but anytime you're dealing with ribs, you're never sure until you start practicing," Shanahan said.

Cornerback Dre Bly should be able to play, but did suffer a separated shoulder making an interception against Pittsburgh. He suffered the injury in the first quarter but didn't come out of the game, a good sign that he'll be ready against Green Bay.

"He played with it the entire game," Shanahan said.

As for cornerback Champ Bailey, who was inactive against Pittsburgh with a quadriceps injury, the Broncos are still taking a wait-and-see line on his injury. They kept him out of the Pittsburgh game for fear of setting him back, but that doesn't mean he's a sure thing to play against Green Bay. Shanahan said he didn't know if Bailey would be ready this week.

"I'm hoping he is," Shanahan said.

The Broncos are also waiting to see about the status of tight end Tony Scheffler, who suffered a lower leg injury late in the game against Pittsburgh.

NOTES, QUOTES

--In an emotional scene Sunday, the Broncos had Darrent Williams' mother, Rosalind, and Damien Nash's wife, Judy, join the captains for the coin toss. Darrent Williams and Damien Nash each passed away this offseason.

As they stood on the sideline waiting to go to midfield, many coaches and players greeted the two women, including Broncos coach Mike Shanahan.

"It was really emotional, to be honest with you," Shanahan said. "I'm sitting there talking to both of them; it's hard to keep from crying."

--Jason Elam has three game-winning field goals this season. Pittsburgh tried to ice him with a timeout with two seconds remaining, but that has never worked on Elam.

"Honestly, it helps," Elam said. "The field was pretty chewed up. I was able to make sure I had a good spot, see what the wind was doing and collect myself a little more."

PLAYER PERSONNEL NOTES --RB Selvin Young could get more playing time if Travis Henry is limited with sore ribs. Young had a nice play on a screen pass on third-and-long against Pittsburgh. He is a good change-of-pace back to the bruising Henry.

--TE Daniel Graham caught a big pass to set up Denver's game-winning field goal against Pittsburgh. Although Graham hasn't been a huge part of the passing game this season, he has still had his number called in some key situations.

--WR Glenn Martinez got a chance to return punts and kickoffs against Pittsburgh. Denver has been impressed with how well he has played since coming off the practice squad a few weeks ago.

--P Todd Sauerbrun hit a 64-yard punt in the fourth quarter against the Steelers. It was his fourth punt of 60 or more yards this season.

--C Chris Myers impressed the coaches with his first career start against the Steelers. He is replacing Tom Nalen, and handled all of the line calls well. Shanahan praised the play of the new-look line.
