ENGLEWOOD, Colo.-Denver Broncos running Clinton Portis has been named AFC Offensive Rookie of the Month for October, the National Football League announced today.
The Broncos second-round draft pick out of Miami led all NFL rookies with 358 rushing yards on 79 carries and three touchdowns.
He averaged 4.5 yards a carry and 89.5 rushing yards a game, while helping to guide the Broncos to a 3-1 record in October. In addition, Portis caught 11 passes for 98 yards (8.9 yards per catch) and one touchdown, and racked up a total of 456 yards from scrimmage, averaging 114 total yards per game.
Portis went over the 100-yard mark twice in the
month, including 102 yards on 20 carries in the Broncos 26-9 win over San Diego (10/6) and 111 yards on 26 carries and two touchdowns in Denver's
24-26 win at New England (10/27).
For the season, Portis leads all NFL rookies in
rushing yards (562) and total yards from scrimmage (694), and ranks second in touchdowns (5), just one behind Cleveland wide receiver Andre Davis.
He is the first Broncos rookie to win the award
since fullback Mike Anderson accomplished the feat in December of 2000, and the second Broncos player to win an individual award this season.
Tight End Shannon Sharpe was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week after he caught 12 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns in the Broncos 37-34 overtime win at Kansas City (10/20).
