Player, battle of the week and rookie report

Check out the battle of the week, player of the week and rookie report from the Broncos training camp.

BATTLE OF THE WEEK: Niko Koutouvides vs. Nate Webster for starting MLB -- Koutouvides was signed in the offseason and it appeared he would step in as the starting middle linebacker. Then Webster responded with a fantastic offseason, working himself into great shape. The two have split time with the starters. Webster has more experience, especially in the middle. He played the outside last year. Koutouvides has some untapped potential the Broncos saw when they drafted him. He was stuck behind Lofa Tatupu in Seattle. Koutouvides probably has the edge, but it is slight.

OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: Andre Hall and Ryan Torain look like they will battle for positioning behind Selvin Young at tailback. Hall was the No. 2 back the entire first week of camp, but Torain played well. Michael Pittman could get in the mix as well, but he missed some time with a hamstring injury and before that he practiced some at fullback because of injuries elsewhere. ... Neither Brett Kern nor Sam Paulescu separated themselves in the punting battle the first week of camp. ... Darrell Jackson held onto the second starting receiver spot through the first week of camp, but Keary Colbert didn't start far behind him. A player to watch is rookie Eddie Royal, who impressed the coaches with some nice plays. ... Cecil Sapp will probably get pushed at fullback before the regular season starts by rookie Peyton Hillis, but Hillis missed most of the first week of camp with a hamstring injury.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: CB Domonique Foxworth -- Foxworth had a great start to camp, punctuated by a 90-yard interception return for a touchdown in a team drill. Foxworth, Denver's nickel cornerback, might have a tough time unseating Dre Bly but he wants to start. Foxworth is also an unrestricted free agent next year, and the Broncos have to decide if they want to lock him up long term. He seems poised for a good year, even if he is restricted to duty in the nickel defense.

ROOKIE REPORT: OT Ryan Clady did everything the Broncos wanted the first week of camp. He will start at left tackle, and already has the confidence of the coaches. ... WR Eddie Royal is impressive. He is small, but he is quick, has good hands and studies hard. ... RB Ryan Torain looks like he could have a chance to be the Broncos' short-yardage back this season, if he doesn't get a bigger role at tailback. ... S Josh Barrett has made enough plays in camp to stand out. He's not going to play with the defense right away, but could make the team if he plays special teams well in the preseason. ... FB Peyton Hillis was set back with a hamstring injury that cost him most of the first week of camp.

INJURY REPORT: C Tom Nalen has a sore knee, but an MRI showed no damage. The Broncos expect him back soon.

WR Edell Shepherd suffered a season-ending knee injury and is on injured reserve.

LB Boss Bailey sat out Denver's final practice of the first week of training camp with some knee irritation, but he said it is not serious.
