Player, battle of the week and rookie report

CB Champ Bailey made his preseason debut in the third game. Bailey had a hamstring injury, but the Denver Broncos were cautious with him and he'll be fine for the start of the regular season.

BATTLE OF THE WEEK: TE Tony Scheffler continues to work behind Nate Jackson. Jackson, not Scheffler, started when Daniel Graham missed Denver's third preseason game with a hamstring injury. Jackson has been the second tight end in two-tight end sets with Graham through the preseason and training camp.

ROOKIE REPORT: WR Eddie Royal has played well and should be a starter once the season begins. However, he did not have a reception in the third preseason game ... CB Jack Williams had a big interception in the fourth quarter against Dallas, and could push to be the Broncos' fourth cornerback. He did not get on the stat sheet against Green Bay. ... OL Kory Lichtensteiger got some reps at center because Tom Nalen is hurt and the Broncos were limiting Casey Wiegmann to one practice a day. ... S Josh Barrett had one tackle and one assist against Green Bay.

INJURY REPORT:

--RB Ryan Torain might not miss as much time as first feared. Instead of a three-month recovery period for a broken bone near his elbow, Torain could be back for Denver's Oct. 20 game against New England.

--C Tom Nalen had another clean-up procedure on his sore left knee. The Broncos think he can be back soon, but the 37-year-old has been slow to heal this offseason.

--CB Champ Bailey made his preseason debut in the third game. Bailey had a hamstring injury, but the Broncos were cautious with him and he'll be fine for the start of the regular season.

--DE Elvis Dumervil might have to wear a cast on his right hand after dislocating and perhaps breaking his right pinkie finger. Dumervil said the injury was no big deal and he wouldn't miss any time.

--S Marquand Manuel broke his right thumb in Denver's third preseason game. He needed surgery, but said he would play in the regular-season opener. Manuel had taken over a starting safety spot from Hamza Abdullah. \
