JJ's draft Analysis - Knowshon Moreno

The Denver Broncos may have surprised a lot of people with its selection of Knowshon Moreno in the first round, but Broncos Update Insider JJ McCartney is very happy with the selection.

RB Knowshon Moreno - Georgia Knowshon Moreno may seem familiar to Broncos fans. This is a shifty running back, very tough, and he is similar in size and style to another Georgia Bulldog who we drafted about 14 years ago(Terrell Davis). The difference is that people know about Moreno. He is heralded as one of the more explosive backs in the draft, and with a 5.5 yards-per-carry average, you can be assured that he got plenty of looks at the combine.

Some question his top running speed, and whether he is going to be effective in the NFL. The same was said of Terrell Davis. It is his ability to see the field and change directions at speed that has me liking this pick a lot.

Moreno also has good hands, and will hopefully be a good relief-valve for whomever lines up at quarterback this fall. Knowshon has 4.5 40-speed(average for a tailback in the league) and he has great acceleration, which is what a cut-back runner needs to exploit holes which we have every reason to expect our veteran offensive line to provide.

The Broncos perhaps are making a statement with this pick…and that statement is that they have no intention of getting caught short-handed this year at the running back position.

This also fuels speculation that Josh McDaniels is not desperate to try and draft a high-priced quarterback. This may be for one of two reasons:

1- McDaniels is confident that he can have success with the Orton/Simms combination heading into camp.

2- He has plans for a trade or may have designs on picking up someone off of waivers to augment our strength at QB.

More to come from the Draft monitoring station shortly.
