Scheffler goes in three way deal

The Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions, and Denver Broncos completed a three-way trade.

Philadelphia have traded a 2010 fifth-round draft pick (137th overall, acquired from the Cleveland) to the Denver Broncos. The Broncos traded TE Tony Scheffler and a 7th round pick (220th overall) to the Detroit Lions. The Lions traded LB Ernie Sims to the Eagles.

"Ernie Sims is an impact player at the linebacker position," said head coach Andy Reid. "He brings a lot of energy to our already energized defense. We are looking forward to adding him to our team."

"We are excited to acquire Ernie Sims," said general manager Howie Roseman. "He plays fast, he's aggressive and his style is a great fit for our defensive scheme. He is a leader who was a team captain for the Lions and we are eager to see what he can do in our defense."

Sims (6-0, 230) was originally a first-round choice (ninth overall selection) of the Lions in 2006 and has since played in 59 games (56 starts) for Detroit, totaling 505 tackles, 2.5 sacks, five forced fumbles and one interception. The 25-year-old linebacker played in 11 games (eight starts) in 2009, and compiled 49 tackles and one forced fumble.

Sims is known in scouting circles as a very fast run and chase linebacker, but tends to overruns plays and free lances. If he can play with more discipline, he'll have a strong chance to take over at WLB. Akeem Jordan is the current starter at that position. Sims signed signed through 2011, but a source told that the final year will void because he met easily attainable playing time incentives in his rookie deal.

Scheffler was looked upon was as an underachiever with with the Broncos based on his talent and high-end athleticism. He quite simply didn't come close to realizing his potential. With Detroit, he'll give the Lions another solid passing option for second-year QB Matthew Stafford. Look for Scheffler to be flex out more as a receiver rather than playing as an inline tight end.
