Broncos Update Insider - 6/11

Elvis Dumervil has seen the Denver Broncos trade some restricted free agents and one got a long-term contract extension from the team, but his situation hasn't changed much.

The outside linebacker and NFL's sack leader is under consideration for a long-term contract, like guard Chris Kuper got in early June, but talks between Dumervil's agent and the Broncos haven't hatched a deal.

The Broncos have said repeatedly they want Dumervil to be a Bronco for a long time, but he won't come cheap.

"We're going to continue to work," McDaniels said. "We know what we want, we know what they want, and we're trying to make it happen."

The Broncos have informed Dumervil if he doesn't sign his tender of $3.168 million by June 15, they will pull the tender for a salary offer of about $630,000, according to the Denver Post. That doesn't sound like the actions of a team that thinks a long-term extension is imminent.

Neither the Broncos nor Dumervil's representatives have said much about contract talks. Signing Dumervil to a long-term deal has to be a priority after the team traded Brandon Marshall and Tony Scheffler -- themselves restricted free agents -- this offseason.

After Kuper signed his extension, McDaniels didn't want to say much about how negotiations were going between the two sides.

"It's hard to gauge that," McDaniels said. "You have conversations with them and sometimes they feel better than others. Ultimately, nobody really cares until it gets done. When it gets done it progressed really fast and everybody is content with the results. When it's not done, while you're working on it, everybody can say what they want."

--First-round pick Demaryius Thomas made his return to offseason practice in the first week of June. Thomas broke his foot just before the NFL scouting combine in February and was happy to return.

"It's just exciting to just be out there with my teammates," Thomas said.

--The Broncos released quarterback Tom Brandstater and the second-year signal caller was claimed off waivers by Indianapolis. The Broncos simply thought their other three quarterbacks were better and wanted them to get all the practice repetitions.

"With the way practice was going and the repetitions, we felt it was clear now and it's time for us to make the decision to go ahead and not get everybody reps," McDaniels said.

--The Broncos cut veteran offensive tackle Maurice Williams with right tackle Ryan Harris returning to practice. Harris had been recovering from a toe injury that ended his 2010 season. They signed fullback Kyle Eckel, who gives the Broncos some depth at the position. Spencer Larsen -- the former two-way player who is no longer playing linebacker -- was the top fullback on the roster with little depth behind him.

--Running back J.J. Arrington is just 85 percent recovered from knee surgery that kept him out all last year, but he is encouraged. Arrington recently returned to practice and is looking forward to contributing to the Broncos this year.

"You just have to have faith," Arrington said. "I kept pushing."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It was different. I'm just trying to come out here to learn some stuff." -- Broncos rookie first-round pick Demaryius Thomas on his return to practice after recovering from a broken foot for about four months.
