Schon: Rumors, Rants & Raves 7/16/10

Spent nearly two minutes mulling over why TO still isn't signed yet… then it dawned on me – the guy's the NFL equivalent of the old dude at the end of the bar at closing time... plus we've got the MLB All Star Game, Delonte West and Tim Tebow all wrapped into the latest RR&R.

I can remember exactly where I was, for almost every monumental sports moment in the last half century; the Miracle on Ice, Jordan's game winning shot in Game Six of the Finals, Elway and the Broncos grabbing back to back Super Bowls and even Tyson going pit bull on Evander Holyfield – but for the life of me I can't remember anything about the last time the National League won the MLB All Star game.

Turns out it was July 9, 1996 and, apparently I was in a self-induced coma. Fast forward thirteen-years and history was made again – Rockies pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez got the start and Braves catcher Brian McCann sealed the deal with a base clearing blast in the 7th - good enough to grab a 3-1 win and bring home the MVP honors. No coma, no kidding and I actually took some serious notes – hopefully I'll remember.

Moving tribute to the late Head Coach Ed Thomas on the ESPYS – Thomas was gunned down on June 24, 2009 doing what he normally did at 8:00 am in the morning; helping some of his high school players lift weights, sharing his faith, giving advice and being the most influential human being Parkersburg IA. has ever seen. There's no one more deserving of the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage….

You gotta love the NBA – especially if you're a member of the NRA or the "Some Guys Never Seem to Learn Anything" club. Case in point Cavs guard Delonte West who pled guilty in a Maryland courtroom to weapons charges. Now mind you, this wasn't your run of the mill weapons charges – this was more in the line of "I'm completely Out of My Freaking Mind" kind of weapon charges - two loaded handguns, a loaded shotgun and an 8½-inch (guaranteed to gut anything that moves) Bowie knife – all found after police pulled him over for speeding on his three-wheel motorcycle and cutting off one of the arresting officers. Haven't had time to look it up but this has got to be an all time record in stupidity.

Props to the Denver Nuggets for making their bid in Free Agency – Five-years, $34 million for former Knick Al Harrington. May not be enough to lure Carmello Anthony into signing the $65 mill the team has proposed – but it's a step in the right direction, especially if Melo's direction is out the door.

Flipping it to football – Spent nearly two minutes mulling over why TO still isn't signed yet… then it dawned on me – the guy's the NFL equivalent of the old dude at the end of the bar at closing time. Yea, he'll probably hook up with somebody – but neither side really gets satisfied and chances are it'll last about as long as your average Charlie Sheen relationship.

Broncos are gearing it up for Training Camp and the biggest news heading into 2010 is the fact that Tim Tebow still leads the NFL in jersey sales (despite ever playing a single down) and now he's got his own line of shoes in association with Nike (just in case you've got a few extra dollars in your pocket after shelling out the equivalent of two weeks pay for the jersey and video game, which also comes out this week).

I've got to get a better marketing agent.
