Browns Post Game Notes
Don Delco on October 24th, 2010 AT 6:51 PM

Below are postgame, as provided by the Browns’ PR staff, following Cleveland’s 30-17 win over New Orleans on Sunday.

•?With today's win the Browns improve to 12-4 all-time against the Saints, including an 8-2 record in New Orleans. It also marked the Browns' first win against an NFC opponent since a 35-14 victory against the New York Giants on October 13, 2008.

•?The Browns have now knocked off the defending Super Bowl champions in each of the past three seasons. In addition to today's win, Cleveland topped Pittsburgh, 13-6, on December 10, 2009 and the New York Giants, 35-14, on October 13, 2008.

•?With 12 points today, Phil Dawson has 1,006 in his career. He now joins Lou Groza (1,349) and Don Cockroft (1,080) as the only players in club history to surpass 1,000 career points.

•?Linebacker David Bowens became the first Browns player to return two interceptions for touchdowns in the same game since Bob Franklin on December 11, 1960 against the Chicago Bears. His first, a 30-yard score, marked the Browns' first defensive score since Brandon McDonald returned an interception 24 yards for a touchdown against Philadelphia on December 15, 2008.

•?Linebacker Scott Fujita recorded a season-best 11 tackles and added a sack and an interception. He now has 3.5 sacks on the season and has recorded a sack in three of the past four contests. He has 22.5 sacks in his career. His interception ended a potential Saints scoring drive as they were on the Browns 11 yard line. It was his first interception of the season and sixth of his career. It was the first time in his career that he has recorded a full sack and an interception in the same game, as he turned in an interception and a half-sack against Philadelphia on October 15, 2006 as a member of the Saints.

•?Running back Peyton Hillis totaled a game-high 69 rushing yards, including a four-yard touchdown scamper in the first quarter. Hillis leads the team with 540 rushing yards and five rushing scores this season.

•?Quarterback Colt McCoy completed 9 of 16 passes for 74 yards. He also hauled in a 13-yard reception on a third and six play, which help set up a 48-yard field goal.

•?Punter Reggie Hodges' 68 yard run on a fake punt was the longest in the NFL by a punter since the merger in 1970, surpassing a 63-yard run by San Francisco's Tom Wittum against New Orleans on October 21, 1971. His run was the longest play of the season for the Browns. Hodges also booted four punts for 168 yards, including two inside the 20-yard line. He had a net average of 42.3 and has recorded a net average of 40.8 or better in each of last five games, with 10 punts inside the 20 in that time.

•?Linebacker Marcus Benard registered a sack and has a team-best 4.5 on the year. He has recorded at least one sack in four of six games he has played this season and has 8 sacks in 12 career games.

•?The Browns' defensive recorded a season-high four interceptions, their most since a five interception game at Baltimore on November 18, 2001. In addition to the two interceptions by Bowens and the one by Fujita, defensive back Sheldon Brown recorded his second interception of the season and 21st of his career.

•?After a three-and-out by the Saints on their opening drive, Cleveland has not allowed a team to score on their opening possession all season. In addition, the Browns have allowed just 13 first quarter points all season, including just one touchdown.

•?Offensive lineman Billy Yates earned his first start with the Browns since joining the club at the beginning of the 2009 season. Today marked his first start since the 2008 season when he started all seven games in which he appeared for the New England Patriots. He has now appeared in 39 career games with nine starts.

•?The Browns committed a season-low four penalties for 30 yards. Cleveland has committed just four penalties over their last six quarters of play.

•?Today's game marked the second time this season that the Browns did not turn the ball over, joining the Baltimore game on September 26.

•?Linebacker Eric Barton recorded his first sack of the season and now has 21 in his career.

•?Defensive back Sheldon Brown has appeared in all 135 regular season games in his career, which began with Philadelphia in 2002. His streak is the second-longest among all active defensive backs.

•?Browns 2010 draft selections offensive lineman Shawn Lauvao and wide receiver Carlton Mitchell each made their NFL debut today.

•Offensive lineman Joe Thomas has started all 55 career games at left tackle and has not missed an offensive snap since joining the Browns as the third overall pick in the 2007 draft.

@saveallunicorns Wouldn’t count on winning that way every week, but it an outstanding game for defense and STs. Ryan/Seely should be proud.

RT @tbrandyberry: @TheOBR Drew Brees just named his kid Bowen and now he gets worked over by David Bowens. Might want to rethink that name.

A Super Bowl win used to mean “NFL Championship”. Now it means: “Nine months from now the Cleveland Browns are going to kick your ass”.

10/24
3:59 PM

David Bowens picks off Brees AGAIN! Runs for a TD AGAIN! 64 Yards! Slowly! BROWNS 30, SAINTS 10, 3:33 remaining.

Recent evidence suggests “Yes!” RT @Jz82983: @TheOBR did the browns learn clock management?

10/24
3:53 PM

That drive only got the field goal but, more critically, burned off 7:34 on the play clock. Clutch.

10/24
3:52 PM

Awesome Phil Dawson bails out the Browns with a 49-yard FG after the drive stalls out. BROWNS 23, SAINTS 10, 5:55 remaining.

And now, Hillis throws a pass – complete to McCoy for a first down with 8 mins left. Hillis’ QB Rating: 118.8. Is there nothing he can’t do?

10/24
3:43 PM

Browns have gone to Peyton Hillis with the game on the line, and he’s delivering. Browns @ Saints 45, 9 minutes, clock ticking.

10/24
3:32 PM

@VReaperV69 It was ruled to not be a fumble. The Saints then challenged the spot of the ball.

10/24
3:32 PM

@AaronONU Likely very dependent on how the Saints come out on defense, but I’m sure he would like to.

10/24
3:29 PM

After replay-related weirdness, the Saints convert a fourth down and subsequently score a TD. BROWNS 20, SAINTS 10, 13:29 remaining

10/24

No fumble. We go to the fourth quarter with Browns up 17 and the Saints likely to attempt a field goal coming up.

The Superdome is sounding strangely quiet as the Saints self-destruct on their first drive of the second half. BROWNS 20, SAINTS 3, 8:35 3Q

We go to halftime after Sheldon Brown picks off a Drew Brees hail mary. What a shocker so far! BROWNS 20, SAINTS 3, Halftime.

3 straight against defending champs? David Bowens with a 30-yard interception return for TD! BROWNS 20, SAINTS 3, 1:49 left in the half.

10/24
2:22 PM

@HeyClubbie The Browns haven’t shown any interest in adding significant wide recievers, for reasons I can’t quite fathom.

10/24
2:19 PM

The Browns go up 13-3 on a field goal which followed a 68 yard run on a fake punt by Reggie Hodges. Weird, but a good kind of weird.

10/24
2:17 PM

@Nic_Dion Reggie Hodges and Phil Dawson are the new Csonka and Kiick.

10/24
2:06 PM

Another time-consuming drive by the Saints, this one resulting in points, thanks a 32-yard field goal. BROWNS 10, SAINTS 3, 5:32 left, 2Q.

A 69-yard Cribbs-to-Wright pass on a punt return sets up a 23-yard Dawson field goal. BROWNS 3, SAINTS 0, 10:25 left 1Q. Nice start!

10/24
12:59 PM

@es27ohioboy He’s active, but not starting. A mild surprise there, since I think most folks assumed he would go right in at RG.
