Jim Zorn Enters the Picture
Dave Kolonich on January 27th, 2011 AT 6:33 PM

A candidate has emerged for the Browns' vacant offensive coordinator position….maybe.

First, from the Baltimore Sun….

Baltimore Sun – Jim Zorn Fired As Ravens' QB Coach

Zorn’s release came after a seven-hour meeting with coach John Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron in which they questioned Joe Flacco’s development this season, the source said. Zorn stayed with Harbaugh and Cameron at Ravens headquarters while the rest of the staff attended the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.

Then, from Jeff Schudel….

News-Herald – Jim Zorn Could Be In Line For Browns' Offensive Coordinator Job

Zorn was the quarterbacks coach under Browns president Mike Holmgren in Seattle from 2001-2007 when Holmgren was the Seahawks’ head coach. Zorn helped develop Seattle quarterback Matt Hasselbeck in the West Coast offense. It is the same offense new Browns coach Pat Shurmur will run.

As for the reason for Zorn's Baltimore dismissal – I think most followers of the AFC North can admit that the Ravens still haven't surrounded Joe Flacco with an overwhelming arsenal of offensive weapons.  Although the profiles of such veterans as Derrick Mason, Anquan Boldin and T.J. Houshmenzadeh are impressive, it's obvious that all three players are basically stationary wide receivers at this point in their careers.

Or, simply put – there is not a game changing talent currently on the Ravens' offense, unless you count running back Ray Rice.  And for this, Zorn becomes the fall guy as the team's quarterbacks coach – a year after taking a similar sword in Washington.

Per Schudel, the marriage between Zorn and the Browns is a natural one.  Zorn has some experience with molding quarterbacks – particularly those of the West Coast variety.  Throw in the idea that the offensive coordinator position in Cleveland is mainly a glorified quarterbacks coach opportunity and Zorn is probably one of the better candidates available.  After all, the duties of the Browns' offensive coordinator position in 2011 will likely be limited to rehearsing the types of plays run by head coach Pat Shurmur.
