Chaun Thompson Scouting Report

Here is the read on Chaun Thompson, the Browns second round pick. You read about him months ago on Bernie's Insiders, and now he is the newest Brown!

NameChaun Thompson  School:  West Texas A&M       Year:  4Sr

Ht:  6-2  Wt:  240  40:  4.58  Pos:  OLB

Bio: All-Conference selection as a senior after leading the team with 104 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, also registering 1 sack, 2 interceptions with 5 pass defenses.  Junior totals were 106/17/2/0/1 after tackling totals of 136/10/3 as a sophomore when he broke into the starting lineup.  Performed brilliantly at the Combine and was one of the best linebackers to take part in the proceedings.  Played all three linebacker spots at West Texas A&M as a senior.

Positives:  Productive and versatile linebacker best on the weak side at the next level.  Breaks down, plays with leverage and displays a good head for the ball, quickly recognizing the action, then taking good angles to the play.  Possess a quick first step to the ball carrier, fires up the field or collapses laterally defending the run.  Fluid changing direction, displays good footwork getting through the traffic and stays with the action.  Disciplined, keeps with his assignments and displays outstanding range.  Gets depth on his pass drops, displays sideline-to-sideline skill and makes plays in every direction.

Negatives:  Undersized and slow shedding blocks once engaged at the point.  Wraps up ball carriers but has tackles broken.

Analysis:  May need time to adjust to a better level of competition but possesses all the tools to eventually round into a complete linebacker and starter in the NFL.
