Suggs will require shoulder surgery due to a torn rotator cuff he suffered when lifting weights in January. As a result, initial speculation that Suggs' draft selection meant an immediate departure for either Jamel White or James Jackson aren't likely to be correct.
As an ex-college coach, Butch Davis seems to be comfortable with the notion of "red-shirting" Suggs for a year, and reaping the benefits in 2004 and beyond. Suggs was considered one of the top running backs in college football prior to suffering an injury during his college career, and the need for surgery is likely to have greatly pushed down his draft value this year. Davis, however, seems to be confident that a bright future may lie ahead for the Virginia Tech back.
David Carducci will have a complete report this evening for Bernies Insiders.
