Head Coach Pat Shurmur Press Conference 7-31-11
Barry McBride on July 31st, 2011 AT 4:36 PM

(Opening statement)- "I think the practice was good. It was the second installation, the second practice. The guys pushed through it. As I said yesterday, they're trying to practice at a high tempo and practice fast. I felt there were a few mistakes, but everything's correctable. As we go through this, the players will lift, do their autographs and we have a thing called stability school that we work on. Then they'll get lunch. We're going to have a meeting and go over everything we did in practice and then come out this afternoon and do a walk through. As far as through the process, I feel good about day two although there's a lot left to do today."

(On Joshua Cribbs not finishing practice)- "He practiced all the way through one-on-ones. Then his knee got a little stiff so we just held him out. We don't think there's anything there."

(On Carlton Mitchell)- "Carlton had a little episode with his shoulder. I won't know anymore or how severe it is, but we'll see here. We'll probably have more information here after practice."

(On Benjamin Watson not practicing)- "He's going to be out here for a little bit. He felt good and he was out here watching practice. We feel like that will clear up soon."

(On if Watson suffered a concussion)- "That's my understanding, yes."

(On Jayme Mitchell showing up to camp)- "The trade stuff and the signee's were going to hold, but we feel like he'll be here soon. There's more paperwork to this than you think. Typically it happens in the offseason when you don't have to report quickly. There are some hoops they have to jump through. Whether it be a trade or a signing, that's just part of what you're dealing with when you're practicing a full team, getting guys signed and bringing new guy in."

(On if there is an update for Phil Taylor)- "I haven't heard, I'll get some more information when I go on in."

(On what stability school is)- "We rotate the position groups through it, they go in and it's the core training. You've seen it with the balls and it's a way for our guys to keep their core strong. They seem to like it. We first started doing it in Philadelphia and then we did it in St. Louis. It's a piece where they can keep their core strength up. We rotate our players through that station much like we would with weight lifting."

(On what he has learned about Colt McCoy from practice yesterday after watching film)- "He's pretty good about knowing what's coming. Typically, a quarterback will evaluate himself after every play. When you go into that meeting, then you're kind of confirming and denying what we both think about the situation. I will say this about Colt, he is very good about admitting when he makes a mistake and that allows you to move forward and find a correction. Get it corrected and move on. I like that about him. He likes the interaction. He's very critical about his performance and that allows you to correct the mistakes and move on."

(On if the quarterbacks he worked with in the past were like that)- "We all have different things were good at. I think if you're going to be really good at this thing as a quarterback you have to be willing to say, ‘I screwed that up,' and then move on. Then the next key component is to make sure they don't repeat those mistakes. That's why you come back out and get the same type of plays and execute them properly."

(On Jordan Cameron's potential)- "After day two, I thought he's competed well. It appears he's in pretty good shape. He caught a couple balls today in the team period. He's a guy who has natural ability as a receiver. He's big, he's lean and he's very athletic. Training camp is a way to develop the other skills that are necessary to be a tight end. We're trying to develop him as a three down player. Until he gets to that point, we'll see how much he can handle."

(On the first day of full pads tomorrow)- "There's always that excitement and anticipation for that first day of pads. It's not much different when you have helmets and shells on. A lot of the same drills we do without pads then we do with pads. We don't tackle to the ground, we try to keep everyone off the ground. There's a little bit more banging, a little bit more clicking. The practice to the normal fan might look very similar. What you're looking for are guys that can drop their weight, protect themselves, guys that can block and finish. Defenders that have a way to separate from blockers. Generally, just watch them carry their pads. You can find a guy that's really fast without the pads and then he slows down a lot. Then there are other guys that play just as fast with their equipment on as they do when they're timed in their shorts. Those are all the type of things you're looking for. "

(On what attracted them to Greg Little)- "What you notice about him, there were a couple situations today, he's pretty good when they're body-to-body. He finds a way to separate in a short area. We'll try to keep working on that. We'll see tomorrow when he puts the shoulder pads on, how it will affect his speed. We don't think it will diminish much."

(On getting to know Little on a personal level)- "He's a fun guy to work with, very talented. You'll find with guys that are playmakers that they have a lot of confidence in their ability. When you're talking about details of things, he's a guy that seems to be taking in the coaching. One of the first things we talk about is being coachable. Being able to stand there and listen. Be able to take something that's going to be able to help you. He's got skill, he's got ability. He's probably working through the first couple day of pads like most players. What I've seen from him is that he's very coachable so far and I think that will bode well for him."

(On Little getting more reps due to injuries)- "When the line get shorter and more guys get reps it helps them. It really does. If they can handle it and they're in shape to handle it, the more you do something the better you get. The lines have gotten a little shorter because of that and he's gotten more and I think it's going to help him."

(On if the 4-3 is suited for D'Qwell Jackson)- "We feel like it is. D'Qwell is very instinctive. He's a guy that's in the middle of all those big bodies and he knows how to sort it all out. He has made some plays on balls already in the first two practices. I was down on 9-on-7 and his run fits looked good. I think he's a fine player and I think being the middle linebacker is probably going to be a good fit for him."

(On if Jackson is going to be the middle linebacker)- "Yes, he's the middle linebacker right now."

(On not playing loud music this year)- "That's the second time we've talked about that (joking). I don't know what to compare that to. We just don't do that."

(On Jackson's size)- "Fairly typical of what we would consider to be three down linebackers in this league. He's got the size. He can take on a block but he'll shed one. He can run with matchups when it comes to pass coverage. He's fairly typical of 4-3 linebackers."

(On Phil Taylor missing time)- "When we were in Philadelphia, this happened. When we were in St. Louis, we had guys that didn't get there right away. What you do is find a way to catch them up when they get here. The key and what we need to focus on is working with the guys that are here. When Phil gets here we'll fight our fanny off to get him caught up. That's the approach you have to take. When a player is not on the field for any reason, as coaches, you have to treat it like he had an ankle injury and the next guy's up. That's how we're doing it."

(On if it's different because of no rookie camps this year)- "We'll see. It's hard to know right now. Once you get into the daily routine of training camp, regardless of how you're practicing, this thing just rolls. You work with the players that are out there. The one's that are nicked up, you try and get them back so they can get their work. From there you move on."

(On the fan turnout)- "This was great, I meant to mention that earlier, but we have got such a tremendous fan base. For them to be able to enjoy football again is fantastic. It's fun to hear when the fans are close like this and can hear some of the, ‘Oohs and aahs,' when they see their favorite player run by. For our fans to be close to our players again is a great thing for Cleveland."

(On Travis Ivey not practicing)- "Were just making sure he's right when it comes to practice time. We're getting him ready to go. Nothing serious."

(On if the quarterback and wide receivers timing was off today)- "I think a little bit. We missed some easy ones. We preach that if you have an easy one, you can't give it up. That's part of what were going to be talking about and cleaning up. There were a couple times where the guys did a good job of separating and we have to make sure we complete those. You read my mind, that was at the top of my list."

(On Seneca Wallace's experience with the West Coast offense)- "It's very similar to the one he ran in Seattle. He's got a real solid foundation of knowledge. Aside from a couple of little tweaks here and there he's ready to go as far as knowing what to do."

Greg Little

(On all the Browns fans at practice today)- "That's tremendous, to have this type of showing at a practice. It kind of gives you that game vibe because you want to step up and produce for the fans that are here. It's definitely a unique thing so to speak for me being a rookie, but it's fun to see such a remarkable crowd step out."

(On if he is still shaking off rust)- "I always look forward to getting better every day. You come out and it's always a fresh start but you want to rebuild on your previous practice. That's what I am looking forward to doing, just trying to get better every day and improve myself in becoming a professional."

(On getting a lot of reps with the one's already due to injuries)- "I just think me coming from a pro style west coast offense in college has helped me tremendously, to be able to step in and be with one's and under that fire so to speak. It's a great learning experience for me to do so and I think coming from that has helped me been a bunch."

(On how much ‘Camp Colt' helped him)- "That was so empowering for me to be a part of that with Colt (McCoy) and to just be able to be around a bunch of the guys on the team. I think that helped the camaraderie a lot. To start getting the terminology and to start getting some plays and some reps in, it was good."

Sheldon Brown

(On how much of his understanding of the defense can help the other guys)- "I think more so the system. I can give them a heads up of what to expect as far as off the field and on the field schedules. Once you can be mentally prepared for that kind of stuff then it carries over to the field and you can perform."

(On helping develop Buster Skrine)- "He is very talented, very fast. He works and he studies. I give respect to Troy Vincent and those guys for teaching me the right way to teach guys. I am not at a point where I think I have to be a starter or I have to do this, at the end of the day I just want to win. I want him to be successful. When I retire, I want to say you know what, I taught that guy something. I hope he can say Sheldon Brown did wonders for me and he can stand before you 10 years later and say the same thing."

Browns Player Quotes (Dawson, Fujita, Hillis, McCoy) 7-30-11
Barry McBride on July 30th, 2011 AT 8:24 PM

Phil Dawson
(On if he felt he was mentally and emotionally moving on at the end of last season)-
"I really didn't know what was going to happen. I am not very good at predicting the future. I felt like that was it. Weather I emotionally said goodbye or not I wanted to make sure people around here knew how I felt. I guess that took me down a road here where in January I thought I may never come back. To get the news this offseason that I will be back and now to be here, it's a surreal feeling, but it's one I am embracing and looking forward to. I am ready to get after it. I am kind of frustrated that I can't be out there practicing right now, hopefully that will all get worked out because I want to get prepared and have a good season."

(On dealing with all the changes during his career with the Browns)- "The changes probably don't affect me as quite as much as the other guys. There are two little yellow polls out there and that's my target. Regardless of what changes are going on, my job really doesn't change. There's very little I need to learn in terms of playbook, some things change with kickoffs and schemes and all of that. Obviously, having the experience of having been through this before has prepared me. Here we are. You can see it positively or negatively and I choose to see it positively. I know the guys are excited about it and that's easy to feel in the locker room so I am all in and I am going to do what I can."

Scott Fujita

(On if he expected the lockout process to be that long when it began)- “It was a long process that wore me out at times, especially those last couple weeks. That part of it is behind me now and I’m just focused on the here and the now, and getting this team to be as good as possible moving forward.”

(On how much of his career has been spent in a Dick Jauron-style defense)- “Quite a bit actually. I’m coming up on my 10th year now, this is my seventh defensive coordinator, and I’ve played in every combination or variation of defense there is. I’ve done a lot of this on both sides, I’ve played inside and outside in this system. It’s a good system, it’s fun, it lets guys play fast. I think it’s a very safety friendly defense which I like, and I like the guys we have back there. I talk about D’Qwell (Jackson) all the time, and a system like this is built for a player of his talent. He is going to be so good in this defense, you guys just wait.”

(On Usama Young)- “Exceptional athlete, he’s one of those guys that can do everything on the back end. If you want him to play nickel coverage, he can do that. He can lock you down as a corner, he is big and has range. He has good leaping ability and great ball skills. I think they moved him to safety last season in New Orleans and body type wise and skill set wise, that’s probably what he is most suitable doing. Awesome guy too, he was real deep in that community down there, real active and involved with kids. Just a really, really good person. I’m glad he is here.”

Peyton Hillis

(On how day one went with the new coaches)- "For the first day and getting back without having OTAs or minicamps, I thought it went really well. As running backs, I don't think we had one mental mistake or error so that was good. As far as the terminology goes, the coaches are teaching it really well. The guys are enjoying it, but overall I thought it was a real good day of practice."

(On if success will get to him)- "For me, no. I have always been the same guy and always will continue to be the same guy. When I hit the football field no matter where it is, practice or games, I am going to give it my all. That's one thing that you don't have to worry about. I am going to do all that I can to win games for this team and for the fans. As far as success goes, the Lord humbles me, pretty fast if I try to get out of line, especially my parents. That's not who I am, that's not who I want to be, other than that I really don't think it's an issue."

(On if Montario Hardesty returning and the addition of Brandon Jackson will help keep him fresh)- "I welcome it with open arms. I think with more talent in the backfield, like you said, it helps me stay fresh and gives us more talent. I am a very unselfish guy, I just want to win ball games. If they get a lot of playing time or if I get a lot of playing time, we've got to make sure we go in there and win ball games. We'll let everything else take care of itself."

Colt McCoy
(On if things are different for him this year coming in as the number one quarterback)-
"It's a lot different. Last year, I really tried to prepare like I was a starter anyways, but coming in as a rookie that's really hard to do, especially when you don't get reps. I'd like to say that my mentality hasn't changed that much but it has. You come out here and you have to be ready to play. I feel like I'm in good shape. I felt like the guys around me; offensive line, receivers, running backs, I feel like overall everybody was in good shape and ready to work. For me, that's good. I need all the work I can get, but I felt like day one went pretty good."

(On his impressions of Greg Little)- "He's a big, physical guy. He hadn't played in a year so you don't really know what to expect. I know he worked really hard with us this summer. I know he has a pretty good idea of what's going on based off what they ran in North Carolina. I am excited to throw to him, I really am. Today, I thought he looked pretty good, but then again the offense has a little bit of disadvantage because we were in shells. Defensive linemen can push the pocket and put their hands up so we have a few disadvantages, but overall I felt like he did good. We just have to keep getting better."

(On Coach Shurmur's message to the team last night)- "His message was that he wanted to have a passionate, productive football team. I think everybody took that to heart and really appreciated what he said. That was one of the first things I wrote down in my book, ‘Have a healthy respect for what went on last year but move on and we want to be a passionate, productive football team.' That's a good message, especially on day one. Like I said, we've got a lot of work to do, but for now we will go back watch some tape and we'll keep rolling."

Transcript: Head Coach Pat Shurmur Press Conference 7-30-11
Barry McBride on July 30th, 2011 AT 8:18 PM

(Opening statement)- "It's fun to finally be back out here, playing and coaching is what players and coaches do and it was fun to get out here and work with the players. For our first day I think it went fairly well, we didn't jump offsides a bunch, we were generally in the right formations, pretty decent execution on both sides. There's plenty of things we have to clean up, but the tempo, some of the things we were demanding for them to do on how to practice they're getting use too because they're kind of just knocking the rust off just like we are as coaches. I think it's a good first day, a good start, but we've got a long way to go before we get where we want to be."

(On his concern moving forward with camp in a shortened period of time)- "I'm not so concerned now that we're out here doing it, I think there's always the anxiety and anticipation for the first day, but I was generally pleased with the way the guys responded with a lot of new terminology. I felt like they handled it real well and I think it's a good foundation of guys here to work with and build on."

(On Eric Steinbach and Mohamed Massaquoi)- "Mo's (Massaquoi) got a little foot deal that he came in with and so were just kind of going to evaluate that as we go and make he's just right when we get him on the field. Steinbach has a little bit of a knee issue. Same type deal. Nothing that we feel is serious. We just want to make sure they're right when we put them out there."

(On Benjamin Watson going down in practice)- "Ben today, you saw he was running across the middle and it looked like he lost his footing on the route, and then he went down. I think he got a knee in the back of the head, so well have to see. He's in there being evaluated, so we'll see how he's doing"

(On Steinbach and Massaquoi possibly getting put on the PUP list)- "Not at this point, we feel like we can get them out here sometime soon, so we'll see.

(On Massaquoi got injured at ‘Camp Colt')- "I don't know. There's some question as to when it happened. I'm not avoiding your question, but I think he's just going to have to let it get settled down and then we'll put him out there when he's ready."

(On what his message was when he met with the entire team for the first time last night)- "Well there were a lot of messages because it was the first time I saw them, but one of the things was that were moving forward and respect for what's happened before us. In the NFL, there's always change, whether there's some change, a little change, a lot of change and I asked the fellas to embrace it and move forward. I think that was part of the message. Some of them might tell you if you ask them. Beyond that, it was just some of the things that were looking for and how we do business. Then there was a piece of the meeting on getting to know one another. Also, we had all the people in the organization that are going to work with the players, had an opportunity to introduce themselves because there are a lot of new faces, and we haven't been around each other in what has been really an abnormal offseason. From that stand point it was a little longer than most."

(On the pace of the first practice)- "I think they're learning what that pace is. I really do believe though you try to practice at game speed as much as you can. From getting the play call and getting in-and-out of the huddle, and I think there's a little bit of a learning curve. Even if you know it, some of what I saw was what you would see on a first OTA after they've been away for a couple of months. For the most part, when we asked them to pick it up they responded."

(On Brandon Jackson)- "He's a fine football player. I feel really good that we got him in the fold. He played 600 snaps, started 13 games for a team that won the Super Bowl. Offensively, I would say he is somewhat of a scheme fit, terminology wise the Packers and Mike McCarthy are from a very similar book. From that standpoint, I'm excited. He's really a sturdy looking guy and we like what we saw in film and were glad he's here. He'll get out there as soon as the rules allow."

(On if Usama Young will competing with starters)- "Yeah, we think so. He's another one of those guys whose had some production. He really is a tough guy and I know he played good ball down there in New Orleans. We feel good about what he might bring to our secondary."

(On if they need another corner because Eric Wright left)- "I think we're going to look in that direction. I don't know if we feel like we need one. Eric (Wright) of course going to Detroit. I think most teams now are still probably shaping their rosters a little bit because we're starting training camp in the midst of, I don't know if this is the beginning, the end of free agency, I don't know what this is. I have to get briefed on the rules every morning. I think I can talk about it (joking). I think everybody is doing a little roster shaping so I don't think you should be surprised of any team bringing in a player or two."

(On Phil Taylor not being here)- "We obviously would love to have him here. I know they're working very hard to get a deal done. I've seen this before in other places, you just work with the guys that you have. The time they missed is valuable, but when you get them here, we have good coaches that will spend time with him and try and get him up to speed as quickly as you can. There are a couple of phases to training camp that are important, especially for a big guy. Obviously the cardio vascular, the carrying of your pads, the engagement with the offensive line, and then learning what you have to do. Those are all things we'll just fight to catch up on when he gets here."

(On who the leaders will be this year)- "There are some guys that have stepped to the forefront. Colt McCoy and Seneca (Wallace) are guys that have shown leadership and that's kind of natural thing from the quarterback position. Obviously Scott Fujita on defense, you've got Sheldon Brown and some of the young guys have shown leadership with T.J. Ward and Joe Haden. Then you've got guys really across the board that you see some of those characteristics. Now, we need to empower them to do it, and as they get more and more comfortable. Most of the time really good leaders get really good at what they're doing and then they can lend a helping hand. There are guys out there that have that skill and ability, that talent to lead and as we get to know each other more and more those guys will rise to the top."

(On what impressed him when watching tape on Joe Thomas)- "Joe is obviously one of the finer left tackles in the business. Very, very good pass protector. I guess what impressed me is that he's a fine run blocker as well. Typically, you find a guy that's good at one and average at others, but I think Joe is good in both phases. Extremely good.

(What makes Thomas so good)- "I think he's big, got long arms, got good feet, has balance and body control. He has pretty good power for a guy that's a tackle and he has a feel for the game. Usually, what makes a player good is kind of a combination and he's blessed with a lot of those things."

(On the new practice rules)- "We had to make some adjustments, most teams in the mornings will have a practice between two and two and a half, three hours. Most teams do that, so it's not that different. This practice we stretched it out a couple of minutes to make it the proper length. This is typical of what you'll see whether they're in pads or not. The change for us was the afternoon sessions. We had some more little full speed type drills, we called them 10-10-10s, and dedicated special teams periods. Now, what ends up happening is we have to do those in walk through mode. We'll still get these things done, but the pace will be different."

(On any concerns he has from what he's seen)- "I think the guys we have on this team have a chance to execute our offense, so that doesn't concern me. I feel good about the talent we're starting with. Right now, maybe what concerns me is a better question for three weeks from now."

(On signing Jayme Mitchell)- "That was a big signing. We feel like he is a terrific pass rusher. The guys that were here last year and I had a chance to watch some practice snaps. He didn't play much in games, but we feel like he's got a chance to be what a defensive end is in this league and so we glad that he'll be with us."

(On what he liked most from Coly McCoy today)- "I thought he did a good job. There're a couple things today, that when we the watch film here at four, I'll think he'll learn from. There were a couple plays out there where he did the right thing, but he could have done something a little more right, I'll say. He immediately knew it. When I approached him to tell him he said, ‘I know I got it,' and I said well you'll see it at four."

(Where Mitchell will play)- "We'll play him probably at left end."

(When he expects Mitchell in)- "I'm going to get a little bit of an update on that. I am sure there's a lot that has gone on since we've been out here."

(On first practice as a head coach)- "I was able to move around more of the field than I normally did, which was fun. But once you get into the practice and through the individual and into the team phases I felt I was standing in about the same spot (laughs)."

(On his personal philosophy with simulated noise during practice)- "I think there's benefit to doing that, and there will be times when we use noise. Typically what we'll do is practice inside and there's a reason for it. We'll do it at times, but I don't do that all the time."

(On the receivers and potential of adding a veteran)- "I don't know about that, that's probably a better question for later in the week. I think, when I looked at the receivers just as a unit we really have pretty good size, big guys. I saw except for a couple of occasions today a couple of misfires, a couple of drops, but for the most part I thought they did a decent job catching the ball. As I get a better feel for the receivers and who they are, I'll have a better idea, but they did a good job today"

(On free agents who were not allowed to practice today)- "A lot of those guys are veteran players and they know how to respond to change. They've been in the meetings and they did a good job of watching all the team drills. They'll find a way to get themselves some exercise here, I'm sure so they can stay somewhat physically ready. You'd love to have your whole team out here all the time and at some point we will."

Pinkston was drafted in the fifth round (150th overall) with a choice acquired from Minnesota. He opened 41 games at the University of Pittsburgh (2006, 2008-10), including 26 consecutive starts at left tackle to close his career. He blocked for a 1,000-yard back in each of his final three seasons.

RT @foxsportsoh: Wright leaves Cleveland for Detroit – Cornerback Eric Wright is now a former Brown. http://ow.ly/1e0EVv

Wright a Lion
Fred Greetham on July 29th, 2011 AT 8:41 AM

The Browns lost one of their own as CB Eric Wright agreed to terms with the Lions. After being drafted in the second-round in 2007, Wright immediately stepped in and started 13 games  for the Browns. He started 55 games in four seasons with 251 tackles, nine interceptions and 45 passes defensed. Wright missed the final three games of 2010 on injured reserve with a leg injury.

Wright was considered an up-and-coming Pro Bowl-type player until his playing level dropped last year considerably. One of his lowlights was on Oct. 3, 2010 when Anquan Boldin of the Ravens beat him for three touchdowns.

The Browns said they were interested in re-signing Wright, but now it is expected the Browns will try and add at least another cornerback as behind projected starters Joe Haden and Sheldon Brown is rookie Buster Skrine, DeAngelo Smith and several undrafted free agent rookies.

Without any news coming out of Berea—other than the obvious—dumping of QB Jake Delhomme—Browns fans are getting restless. However, there is hope, according to Pat Shurmur.

"There is a lot going on behind the scenes, believe me,"  Shurmur said Wednesday. "But what we're doing will start to become public (Thursday) at 4."

The OBR's Lane Adkins reports that the Browns are in the  mix for three significant free agents, but Tom Heckert has said the Browns are going to be relatively conservative in that area. Two of the players are possibly OT Willie Colon and DE Ray Edwards.

"Salary cap room is not an issue for us but we'd much rather spend it on our young players that we have right  now," Heckert said. "We do like our players, so we'll spend it, that's not a question."

The Browns are expected to retain K Phil Dawson (franchise tag), TE Evan Moore (restricted FA) and possibly S Abe Elam (unrestricted FA). DL Robaire Smith and CB Eric Wright are other players the Browns have talked with, but nothing has transpired.

"We've talked to a lot of our players and I've have a lot of good conversations with them," Heckert said. "We'll just have to wait and see what happens."

Heckert said his priority is building through the draft.

"The  most active we're ever going to be was last year," Heckert said. "We've talked to a zillion guys in the last couple of days, but we don't expect to sign many. I don't think there will be any major surprises, no, but I mean, it's still Wednesday."

Dawson Back: It appears that K Phil Dawson and the Browns have mended their differences and Dawson will rejoin the team. Heckert said he "had a very good conversation with Phil (Wednesday), and we'll see what happens."

Dawson appeared headed for free agency as he sold his Westlake home and relocated to Texas, but with the franchise tag on him, he will most likely sign the one-year $3.175 million contract tender the Browns offered. The Browns can also sign him to a longer term contract.

Talkin’ Football–Finally
Fred Greetham on July 26th, 2011 AT 1:11 PM

BEREA—A group of Browns fans stood in front of the team's facility on Lou Groza Blvd. in Berea chanting "Here we go Brownies, Here we go…(Bark, bark)."

Football is back in Cleveland!

Reggie Hodges, Joe Haden and T.J. Ward were some of the players that showed up at the facility on the first day players were allowed back.

Rookie Free Agents: Although, no official word has come out of Berea regarding signings, it has been reported by numerous sources that the Browns have signed several undrafted rookie free agents: QB Troy Weatherford (Hillsdale), LB Brian Smith (Notre Dame), LB Sidney Tarver (Tennessee State), CB Carol Gettis (Missouri), DL Kyle Anderson (Georgetown College), RB Donald Buckram (UTEP) and WR Christ Matthews (Kentucky).

Local Kid Coming Home: It is believed the Browns are interested in S Donte Whitner. According to the OBR's Lane Adkins the Browns are looking for a strong presence in the secondary in Dick Jauron's 4-3 scheme. According to Adkins, there is a ‘"mutual interest in (Whitner) and the Browns."

Comings and Goings:It is believed the Browns have talked with QB Jake Delhomme's agent about his contract situation according to the OBR's Lane Adkins. Other rumors are the Browns have targeted two defensive linemen, one defensive back and one offensive lineman in free agency. DL Jayme Mitchell is a player the Browns have targeted all along as one of their own they are trying to re-sign…The Browns reportedly have put out feelers about adding a veteran wide receiver, but WR Vincent Jackson and Terrell Owens are not among them.
