Mason Unck Scouting Report

Their names are listed at the bottom of a four-inch-wide column of newsprint about this time of year. Rookie free agents. Guys who weren't drafted but still want to live the dream. Each of them are players who have potential, if the fit is right... Tony Pauline tells us what the scouts say about one trying to be a Brown: Sun Devil linebacker Mason Unck.

Name: Mason Unck  SchoolArizona State   Year:   5Sr

Ht:  6-2  Wt:  250  40:  4.89  Pos:  ILB

Bio: Starter at outside linebacker three of the last four seasons. Second on the team in tackles last season with 111, also posting 14.5 tackles for loss, two sacks with 1 interception.  Junior totals were 61/7/3 after 57/9/2.5 in 1999 when he earned PAC 10 Freshman honors.  Suffered a torn ACL prior to the 2000 season and saw limited action.

Positives:  Relentless defender destined for special teams.  Gives top effort, flies around the football and hard hitting.  Quick reading or picking up his assignments, forceful moving up the field and strong at the point of attack.

Negatives:  Best in a straight line, stiff and looks unathletic at times.  Limited skills in pass coverage and can not quickly alter his angle of attack.

Analysis:  Tenacity and aggressive style of play should endear him to a coaches heart and make him a special team's demon.
