Scouting Report: Richard Alston reported last night, and confirmed this morning, that the Cleveland Browns have signed East Carolina WR Richard Alston. Here is Tony Pauline's scouting report on Alston - does he have what it takes to crack into a deep group of wide receivers?

Name:   Richard Alston  School: East Carolina Year: 5Sr

Ht:  5-11  Wt:  210  40:  4.62  Pos:  WR

Bio: Former quarterback who also lined up behind center as a senior.  Totaled 36 receptions for 702 yards with 6 scores last season after 31/443/3 as a junior.

Positives: Big bodied receiver with solid pass catching skills.  Sees the field, finds the open spot in the defense and gets separation.  Stays low exiting his breaks, comes back to the ball and displays soft hands.  goes over the middle, makes the difficult catch in traffic and holds onto the ball in a crowd.  Catches the ball in stride and displays a penchant for breaking it deep.

Negatives:  Not quick releasing off the line, lacks the consistent hands and all to often lazily lets the pass get inside of him.  Does not time well in the forty.

Analysis:  Took well to the receiver position after initially moving there as a junior and though he lost his starting quarterback did not become the focal point of the offense or have the senior campaign many thought he was capable of.  Has flashed skill the past two seasons but must take his game to another level and become more consistent if he's to have any real opportunity of making a final roster.
