More Third Down Woes

For the second consecutive week, the Browns offense failed to convert third downs and the Browns defense failed to get off the field on third downs. Also, for the second consecutive week, the Browns lost.

BALTIMORE--One of the main differences in the loss to the Ravens was the Browns defense could not get off the field on third down. On the Ravens first touchdown drive, Joe Flacco was three-of-three for 44 yards, all on third down. On the first third down attempt of the third quarter, Flacco hit Torrey Smith for 23 yards on third-and-6. On the next attempt, facing third-and-7, Flacco hit Marlon Brown for 10 yards in front of Tashaun Gipson. On the third try, Flacco converted a pass to Brandon Stokley for 11 yards to the Browns' 13 with Buster Skrine on the coverage.

On the second scoring drive to make it 14-6, Flacco hit Stokley for a first down on third-and-16 in front of Skrine. On the next third down situation, he hit Marlon Brown in front of Owens to the Browns' six.

Leading 14-6, Flacco hit Stokley on third-and-3 for a four-yard gain and a first down as the Ravens preserved their lead to win the game. Flacco's streak was snapped with just over 3:40 to play when Stokley caught a pass but was tackled short of the first down.

Meanwhile, the Browns couldn't sustain drives on third downs. The Browns converted their first attempt on third down in the third quarter, but then were short on a five-yard pass to Davone Bess on third-and-8. On the next possession, Weeden converted a first down once again on the first attempt, but threw an incomplete pass to Greg Little on third-and-12.

After only converting 4-of-10 on third downs in the first half, Flacco was five-of-five in the second half, resulting in points.

Weeden Hurt: QB Brandon Weeden hit his hand on the helmet of a Ravens player and QB Jason Campbell took over with 3:34 to play with the Browns starting at their own one yard line. Campbell's first pass was incomplete but a pass interference call moved it to the 22. Weeden finished 21-of-33 for 227 yards. He was sacked five times. QB Jason Campbell was just 1-of-5 for six yards in relief of Weeden.

In the fourth quarter, Mingo rushed Flacco and batted the pass into the air and almost intercepted it.

Game of Inches: The Browns went for the first down on fourth-and-4 with 14:44 to play from the Ravens 36. Weeden hit TE Jordan Cameron on a crossing route and the ball was spotted just an inch or two short of the first down. Rob Chudzinski challenged the spot and it was upheld.

Opportunity Missed: Midway through the third quarter, RB Chris Ogbonnaya ran wide open down the sideline on the wheel route but QB Brandon Weeden overthrew him by inches. The ball went off Ogbonnaya's fingertips. The field was wide open ahead of Ogbonnaya.

Captain Turnover: LB D'Qwell Jackson recovered a fumble on the Ravens' 45 after RB Ray Rice was stripped of the ball by LB Craig Robertson.

Phil's Fit: DL Phil Taylor picked up a personal foul after DL Desmond Bryant dropped RB Ray Rice for a three-yard loss on the second play of the game. The Ravens would have been in third-and-long, but the penalty kept the drive alive and the Ravens drove into field goal range. However, K Justin Tucker missed the 50 yard attempt. On at least two occasions, it looked as though Taylor waived DL Ishmaa'ily KItchen attempted to replace Taylor and Taylor waved him off.

Sack Attack: Mingo had a sack and Sheard and Bryant brought Flacco down in the second quarter. Sheard knocked Flacco's arm on a third down attempt in the fourth quarter.

Cundiff Revenge: K Billy Cundiff was 2-of-2 on field goal attempts in the first half, including a 51-yard attempt with two seconds left in the first half. He was just one-of-13 on attempts from 50 yards out since 2009 before his 51 yard attempt.
