BEREA, Ohio — Tight end Jordan Cameron is anxious to get back on the field and start making plays. He has been back on the practice field the past two days with a non-contact jersey on. He has been taking part in the 7-on-7 passing drills the past two days and he’s hoping he will be back in time for next Monday’s nationally televised game against the Redskins.
“The coaches are easing me back in,” Cameron said after practice. “I’m anxious to get back in there.”
Cameron suffered a sprained AC Joint in his shoulder in the scrimmage at the University of Akron last Saturday. Pettine said there’s a chance Cameron could be back in full contact at practice as soon as Wednesday. He also said he expected him to be able to play next week in the second preseason game.
“We’ll see how he feels (tomorrow),” Pettine said. “I anticipate him going against Washington.”
Browns Sign Grossman: Newly signed Browns quarterback Rex Grossman was at practice as an observer Tuesday after the Browns released QB Tyler Thigpen.
Pettine was asked why the move was made now.
“We’re always in a situation if we think we can make the roster better, we’re going to do it,” Pettine said. “He’s a guy that’s very familiar with (offensive coordinator) Kyle (Shanahan’s) system. We were very appreciated of what Tyler did, but we wanted to get Rex in here.”
Pettine was asked how many quarterbacks the Browns would keep.
“We haven’t gotten to that,” he said. “I think it will depend on the rest of the roster. Connor Shaw will get more time in the preseason to see where he is at. Those are all decisions down the road.”
“I think he’ll hope the whole room as far as the stuff he’s been through and he knows the system as well as he does.”
Pettine said the signing of Grossman, who was with Shanahan with the Texans (2009) and the Redskins the past four years doesn’t make Hoyer expendable.
Quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains gave his input on signing Grossman.
“He brings us a veteran presence that knows the offense,” Loggains said. “He was with Kyle (Shanahan) and he knows him well.”
Grossman (6-1, 225) says he’ll help out however he is asked.
“I’m here to help,” Grossman said after practice.
Grossman was asked what he saw in the offense on his first day.
“I’ve just seen one practice but it looked pretty smooth to me.”
With the release of Thigpen, Shaw received reps with the third team.
Browns/Lions Top Ratings: The Browns and Lions preseason opener turned out to be the most-watched game and highest-rated televised preseason game in NFL Network’s history.
Pettine was asked if he thought it was to see his first game or to see QB Johnny Manziel. The game was watched by an average of 2.82 million viewers, which was a 1.81 US HH rating.
“My first game no it is not surprising but the phenomenon still surprises all of us. We want the attention on us because we’re winning football games.”
The next closest was the 2007 Hall of Fame game between the Saints and the Steelers in 2007 with 2.07 million viewers and a 1.25 US HH rating.
Sidelined: DL Billy Winn (abdomen), DL Desmond Bryant (rest), LB Darius Eubanks (shoulder), WR Nate Burleson (hamstring) and WR Josh Gordon (abdomen) were on the stationary bikes and with the trainers on the side during practice.
Pettine was asked if Bryant is injured and he said his scheduled day off was moved up because he had something “bugging” him that he was going to have checked out. The Browns listed Bryant’s injury as a wrist injury after practice.
OL Nick McDonald (wrist) is still on the Active/non-football injury list.
