Reports: Browns acquire WR Phillip Bates

According to the Seattle Times, the one-time college quarterback is headed to Cleveland

The Cleveland Browns have acquired WR Phil Bates, according to reports coming out of Seattle. Bates cleared waivers earlier today.

Bates has bounced back and forth from the active roster to the practice squad in Seattle, but has an interesting history. He hails from Ohio University, but originally played quarterback and at Iowa State University, switching to receiver for the Bobcats after a shoulder injury. The Seahawks signed him after he went undrafted in 2012, looking on him largely as a wide receiver, although the 6’11", 220 player got a brief look at fullback.

Bates may be most famous for a fight during training camp this year with quiet, reserved Seahawks CB Richard Sherman.

Here’s a thread on the Watercolor with more discussion on the acquisition.
