If there’s one reporter who’s making a name for himself in Cleveland this off-season - and I’m not sure it’s entirely in a positive way - it’s CBSSports.com’s Jason La Canfora. Not content dropping Berea bombs about dysfunction, the one-time NFL Network insider is now weighing in on the pursuit of Josh McCown by the Browns.
In his latest piece for CBS, La Canfora expects the Browns to be so desperate to land a starting quarterback that they pursue McCown - and he expects McCown to pull down $5 million per year.
This is a non-trivial payday for a recently released quarterback who steered his last team to a 1–10 record and who, at 35, is charitably in the twilight of his playing career.
“All of the teams he has visited with – the Bills, Jets, Bears and Browns – remain very interested in him”, writes La Canfora, “and I would not be surprised if he gets $5 million a year. Just a hunch, but I could see this coming down the Bills and Browns, both of whom need a starter badly.”
Be a quarterback
Be willing to be a backup
Don’t be delusional about your own abilities
In the same article, La Canfora shows why we have gently encouraged Browns fans to keep expectations low on Ndamukong Suh:
“Count me among those who believe Jacksonville makes a very strong play for Ndamukong Suh, who is prized to make more money than anyone else in this free agent class…. Ditto for Oakland. Expect the Raiders to be in the Suh derby as well…”
We’re guessing he means “poised” rather than “prized”, but never mind, he’s on a roll, and the competition for Suh will be fierce if he escapes the clutches of the Lions.
